Biography

Short Description

John Ingram was an English Roman Catholic priest and martyr of the Elizabethan period, born in 1565 at Stoke Edith in Herefordshire. He came from a Protestant family and is recorded as having been educated at New College, Oxford, before his conversion to Catholicism. Like many English recusants of the later sixteenth century who sought ordination, he left the country to train abroad, where Catholic seminaries for the English mission had been established after the Reformation. He entered the English College at Reims and later continued his studies at the English College in Rome, the principal seminary for English secular clergy on the Continent.

He was ordained a priest in Rome toward the end of the 1580s and in 1592 was sent on the mission, working first in Scotland and then in the north of England. At that time the presence of seminary-trained priests in England was treated as high treason under statutes of Elizabeth I, and pastoral work among Catholics had to be carried out in secret. Ingram’s ministry therefore belonged to the underground network of recusant clergy who moved between safe houses in the northern counties and across the Scottish border.

On 25 November 1593 he was arrested at the mouth of the River Tyne. He was taken to the Tower of London and there subjected to torture, including the rack, in an effort to force him to name other Catholics and priests. Contemporary accounts describe him as remaining silent under interrogation. From prison he wrote letters that have in part survived. After confinement in the Tower he was sent north again, being held at York and at Durham before being brought to Newcastle upon Tyne to stand trial for his priesthood.

On 26 July 1594 he was executed by hanging, drawing, and quartering, the penalty prescribed for treason. He was about twenty-nine years old. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 22 November 1987 as one of the Eighty-five Martyrs of England and Wales, a group of men and women put to death between 1584 and 1679 for their Catholic faith or priesthood. He is commemorated on 26 July, the anniversary of his death. He was a secular (seminary) priest rather than a member of a religious order, and there is no record of marriage or children, consistent with the celibacy required of Catholic clergy of his time.
