Biography

Short Description

John IV of Constantinople, known as John the Faster (Greek: Ἰωάννης ὁ Νηστευτής, Iōannēs ho Nēsteutēs), was Patriarch of Constantinople from 582 until his death in 595. He was a native of Constantinople, capital of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, and came from relatively modest circumstances. Before taking holy orders he is reported to have worked as an artisan, in some accounts as a goldsmith or engraver. He entered the clergy of the Great Church, Hagia Sophia, was ordained deacon, and held the office of skeuophylax, the official responsible for the sacred vessels and liturgical treasures. His extreme personal austerity, above all prolonged fasting, earned him the surname Nesteutes and a reputation for holiness at court. In April 582, after the death of Patriarch Eutychius, Emperor Tiberius II Constantine appointed him to the patriarchal throne of the imperial city.

John’s patriarchate spanned the close of Tiberius II’s reign and most of that of Emperor Maurice. He is remembered in the wider history of the Church chiefly for the controversy over the title Ecumenical Patriarch. A synod held at Constantinople in the late 580s used that style in its acts. Pope Pelagius II and, more fully, Pope Gregory I objected that the adjective appeared to claim a universal jurisdiction they held to belong to the Roman see, or at least to disturb the traditional ranking of the patriarchal churches. John and the Byzantine court answered that the title was honorific and already customary in the East, denoting the bishop of the capital of the oikoumene rather than a juridical supremacy over the other patriarchates. Letters exchanged among Gregory, John, and Maurice, preserved in Gregory’s register, show that the dispute was not resolved in John’s lifetime and became a lasting point of friction between Rome and Constantinople.

In pastoral discipline John is associated with a penitential handbook, the Kanonarion or canons of John the Faster, which assigned periods of penance for a wide range of sins, including various sexual offences. Later Byzantine canonists such as Theodore Balsamon discussed and sometimes mitigated these tariffs; modern scholars have questioned how much of the recension that circulated under John’s name is authentically his, but the collection influenced Orthodox penitential practice. Contemporary and later notices dwell on his unremitting fasting, vigils, and almsgiving, presenting him as a type of the monk-bishop at a time when the see of Constantinople was growing in ceremonial and administrative self-consciousness.

John IV died in Constantinople on 2 September 595 and was succeeded by Cyriacus. The Eastern Orthodox Church venerates him as a saint and commemorates him on 2 September. His tenure illustrates both the sixth-century rise of Constantinopolitan titles and claims and the persistence of a severely ascetic ideal among the city’s patriarchs.
