Biography

Short Description

The name John Joseph is too common, and too widely shared across centuries, churches, and continents, to identify a single historical person from the label alone. No Wikidata identifier, no Wikipedia article, no diocese, religious order, century, or place of origin was supplied with the request. Under those conditions it is not possible to assign a verified birth year, death year, birthplace, burial site, or any of the other biographical fields without substituting one well-known namesake for another. Doing so would be guesswork. The structured fields are therefore left blank.

In Catholic hagiography the figure most often meant by this pairing of names is Saint John Joseph of the Cross (Giovanni Giuseppe della Croce), born Carlo Gaetano Calosirto on the island of Ischia in 1654 and deceased at Naples in 1734. He entered the Discalced Franciscans (the Alcantarine reform) as a youth, served as a superior and novice master in the Kingdom of Naples, and was remembered for austerity, spiritual direction, and reported wonders. He was beatified in 1789 and canonized in 1839; his feast is kept on 5 March, and he is associated with Ischia. Those dates and offices belong to that friar only. They must not be copied onto an unidentified “John Joseph.”

Many other men have borne the same two baptismal names. They include diocesan bishops in Asia and the Americas, members of later religious congregations, and modern clergy such as Bishop John Joseph of Faisalabad (twentieth century). None of these lives can be treated as the default subject. Some were married or secular; others were professed religious. Some were never proposed for public cult. Without a see, an order, a death date, or a reliable catalogue entry, it is impossible to say whether the intended person was a pope or patriarch (there is no Bishop of Rome or Coptic Pope of Alexandria known simply as John Joseph), whether he married, or whether he had children.

Because the subject cannot be pinned to a unique, source-backed individual, no feast day, patronage list, canonizing pope, or beatifying pope can be stated as fact. Anyone seeking a full hagiographical notice will need at least one further marker—religious name in religion, island or city of origin, year of death, or a catalogue number—before the life can be written from verified sources rather than from the nearest famous homonym.
