Biography

Short Description

John of Beverley was an Anglo-Saxon bishop and saint in the kingdom of Northumbria during the late seventh and early eighth centuries. Later medieval tradition, set down in the eleventh-century Vita by Folcard of Saint-Bertin, names Harpham in the East Riding of Yorkshire as his birthplace; no contemporary writer records the year of his birth. He is reported to have been educated at Canterbury in the school associated with Archbishop Theodore of Tarsus and Abbot Hadrian, and thereafter to have lived as a monk at the double monastery of Whitby under Abbess Hilda. That training placed him among the leading Northumbrian churchmen of the generation that followed the Synod of Whitby.

In 687 he was consecrated bishop of Hexham. In the early eighth century he was translated to the bishopric of York, which he administered until he resigned the see. Bede the Venerable, the principal contemporary authority for John's life, states that he received ordination as deacon and as priest from John. Bede devoted several chapters of the fifth book of the Ecclesiastical History of the English People to John's deeds, writing within living memory of the bishop and thereby furnishing the core of what can be known about him.

According to Bede, John was credited with a number of healings. At a secluded oratory near Hexham he is said to have restored speech to a youth who had been mute from birth, patiently teaching him to produce letters, syllables, and words over the course of some days, and also to have cured a scabby infection of the young man's head. Bede further relates that John blessed a nun who suffered from a painful swelling of the arm and that she recovered; that he healed the wife of a thegn named Puch after celebrating Mass in a chapel the thegn had built; and that other sick persons were restored at various places in his care. These stories, whatever their precise historical character, shaped his later reputation as a miracle-working pastor.

Toward the close of his episcopate John resigned York and withdrew to the monastery he had founded at Beverley, known in his own time as Inderauuda, in the wood of Deira. He died there on 7 May 721 and was buried in the monastic church. His shrine became an important pilgrimage site in later Anglo-Saxon and medieval England. King Athelstan is remembered as a notable benefactor and devotee. In 1037 Pope Benedict IX canonized him. The great church now called Beverley Minster grew around his cult. Besides the principal feast on 7 May, a feast of the translation of his relics was kept on 25 October.

John is honoured as the patron saint of Beverley. On the strength of Bede's account of the mute youth he has also been invoked as a patron of the deaf and of people with speech impairments. Later medieval English kings showed marked devotion to him; King Henry V, whose victory at Agincourt fell on the feast of the translation of John's relics, publicly attributed that success in part to the saint's intercession and encouraged the observance of the feast. John's historical importance rests on Bede's testimony, on his role in the Northumbrian church between the age of Wilfrid and the generation of Bede, and on the enduring regional cult centred on Beverley.
