Biography

Short Description

John of Cologne, known in Dutch as Jan van Keulen or Johannes van Keulen, was a Dominican priest of the sixteenth century and one of the Catholic figures later honored as the Martyrs of Gorkum. Surviving sources identify Cologne, in the Rhineland of the Holy Roman Empire, as his place of origin, but they do not record a verified year of birth. He entered the Order of Preachers and was ordained to the priesthood. By the time of the Dutch Revolt he was exercising pastoral ministry as a parish priest at Hoornaar, a village in the County of Holland not far from the town of Gorinchem (also called Gorcum or Gorkum).

In 1572 Calvinist Sea Beggars, or Watergeuzen, operating in the context of the revolt against Spanish Habsburg authority, captured Gorinchem toward the end of June. They arrested the town’s Catholic clergy, among them Franciscan friars, a Premonstratensian canon, secular priests, and others, and held them under harsh conditions. The captors demanded that the prisoners abandon Catholic teaching on the authority of the pope and on the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. John of Cologne, then at Hoornaar, learned of the imprisonment of these priests and went to Gorinchem in order to bring them pastoral care and the sacraments. He was detained in turn and added to the group of captives.

The prisoners were taken by water to Brielle (Den Briel), then held by William II de la Marck, known as Lumey. There they were again pressed to recant. Contemporary Catholic accounts state that all of them refused. During the night of 9 July 1572 the nineteen were hanged in a turf shed belonging to a former monastery at Rugge, near Brielle. John of Cologne was among those put to death. Reports of the time describe mockery, mutilation, and the disposal of the bodies in ditches.

Devotion to the group grew in Catholic circles in the following decades. The nineteen, including John of Cologne, were beatified by Pope Clement X in 1675 and canonized by Pope Pius IX on 29 June 1867. They are commemorated together on 9 July. John is remembered in Dominican and wider Catholic tradition as a priest who left a place of relative safety to assist imprisoned fellow clergy and who died rather than deny core doctrines of the Catholic Church. Precise details of his early life remain sparse in the historical record, and much of what is known of him is bound up with the shared fate of the Martyrs of Gorkum.
