Biography

Short Description

The figure given as John of Jesus Hernández y Delgado cannot be securely identified from the standard historical and hagiographical sources available to this account. No matching entry appears in the Roman Martyrology, the Acta Sanctorum, the principal modern dictionaries of saints, published episcopal catalogues of Spain and Spanish America, or the publicly documented lists of beatifications and canonizations. The English form of the name corresponds to a Spanish-style combination of a religious name (Juan de Jesús) with a double surname (Hernández y Delgado), a pattern common among Hispanic clergy and religious from the early modern period onward, but onomastic resemblance is not evidence of a particular life, cult, or office.

Because the universal lists of the Bishops of Rome and of the Coptic Popes of Alexandria are complete and well published, it can be stated that no pontiff bore this name. The same holds for the patriarchal and catholicosal sees of the Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Coptic, and Church of the East communions. No verified feast day, patronage, place of burial, or decree of beatification or canonization can be attached to this exact name. Whether the subject was a diocesan priest, a member of a religious order that used the formula of Jesus in religion, a locally venerated servant of God, or a person whose biography has been confused with better-known Johns of Jesus (for example Carmelite or Franciscan figures of that religious name) cannot be determined from reliable published evidence.

In the absence of a contemporary vita, a diocesan informative process, an independent scholarly biography, or an archival notice that can be corroborated, the prudent course is to leave vital dates, places, order, and family status blank rather than to infer them from similarly named persons or from the year in which some other cleric took office. Further progress would depend on primary research in diocesan and order archives, especially in Spain or Spanish America, and on confirmation that a Wikipedia or Wikidata item under this heading actually corresponds to a documented historical individual rather than to an unresolved or mis-titled record.
