Biography

Short Description

John of Kronstadt was born Ivan Ilyich Sergiev on 19 October 1829 (Old Style; 31 October New Style) in the village of Sura in the Pinega district of the Arkhangelsk Governorate, in the far north of the Russian Empire. He came from a poor family of the clerical estate; his father, Ilya Mikhailovich Sergiev, served as a church reader. Contemporary and later Orthodox accounts describe him as a frail child who at first found learning extremely difficult, and they attribute a later improvement in his studies to persistent prayer. He was educated at the parish school and the Arkhangelsk Theological Seminary, then at the Saint Petersburg Theological Academy, from which he graduated in 1855.

In 1855 he married Elizaveta Konstantinovna, daughter of Archpriest Konstantin Nesvitsky of Saint Andrew’s Cathedral in Kronstadt. The marriage was understood as a spiritual union: the couple lived together without marital relations and had no children. He was ordained to the priesthood the same year and appointed to Saint Andrew’s Cathedral in Kronstadt, the fortified naval city on Kotlin Island in the Gulf of Finland. Kronstadt then combined a military and commercial port with severe urban poverty, overcrowding, and widespread drunkenness. As a parish priest of the married (white) clergy rather than a monk, he undertook an unusually intensive ministry, celebrating the Divine Liturgy daily, hearing confessions of very large numbers of people, visiting the sick, the imprisoned, and the destitute, and acquiring a wide reputation for pastoral counsel and for prayers associated with reported healings.

His charitable work was organized on a large scale. He founded and supported the House of Industry (Dom Trudolyubiya) in Kronstadt, which combined workshops and employment for the poor with a school, shelter, and other forms of material and moral assistance. His spiritual diary, published as My Life in Christ, became one of the most widely read works of late nineteenth-century Russian Orthodox spirituality. He preached against alcoholism, religious indifference, and currents of thought he regarded as destructive of Church and monarchy, including the religious teaching of Leo Tolstoy and revolutionary socialism. In his later decades he was a nationally known figure; pilgrims and petitioners came to Kronstadt in great numbers, and he traveled to other cities to serve and preach. He was associated with conservative monarchist circles, including honorary ties to the Union of the Russian People, a connection that remains historically controversial.

He died in Kronstadt on 20 December 1908 Old Style (2 January 1909 New Style) and was buried at the Ioannovsky Convent (St. John’s Monastery) on the Karpovka River in Saint Petersburg, a women’s monastery he had founded. He was glorified as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia in 1964 and by the Moscow Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church in 1990. In the Orthodox liturgical calendar he is commemorated principally on 19 October and 20 December (Julian dating).
