Biography

Short Description

John of Prislop (Romanian: Ioan de la Prislop, also Cuviosul Ioan de la Prislop) is a saint of the Romanian Orthodox Church, remembered as a monk and forest hermit attached to Prislop Monastery in Țara Hațegului, in present-day Hunedoara County, Transylvania. Almost nothing about him can be established from contemporary documents. The outline of his life is preserved in local monastic memory and in later Orthodox synaxaria, which place him in the late medieval or early modern period, generally the fifteenth or sixteenth century, without a securely attested year of birth or death. He held no episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office.

According to this tradition he was a native of the village of Silvașu de Sus, near the monastery. He received the monastic tonsure at Prislop, a house whose origins are themselves partly legendary: it is associated with the activity of Saint Nicodemus of Tismana in the late fourteenth century and was restored in the mid-sixteenth century by Princess Zamfira, daughter of the Wallachian prince Moise Vodă. After living in community, John withdrew to a cave in the wooded slopes a short distance from the monastery, following the hesychast pattern of solitude, fasting, and unceasing prayer familiar in the Orthodox Balkans. The cave identified with him remains a place of pilgrimage.

Hagiographical accounts state that he died by violence. A hunter, seeing a figure clad in a sheepskin or coarse hide among the trees, took him for a wild animal and loosed an arrow that killed him. His body was recovered and buried at Prislop Monastery. The story cannot be independently verified and has the character of a pious legend, but it has shaped his cult. As a professed monk he is not recorded as having married or had children.

Local veneration at Prislop continued for centuries. The Romanian Orthodox Church commemorates him on 13 September. He is described as having been numbered among the saints by the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church in the modern period, when a number of Romanian ascetics were added to or confirmed in the calendar; popular accounts do not always distinguish a precise synodal act from the older local cult. No distinct list of patronages of cities, professions, or illnesses is firmly attached to his name in standard sources, beyond his association with Prislop Monastery and the hermits of the Hațeg region.
