Biography

Short Description

Saint John of Rila (Bulgarian: Ivan Rilski) was a medieval Bulgarian hermit and monastic founder, and is the most widely venerated native saint of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. He was born, according to the received hagiographical tradition, in 876 in the village of Skrino in the western Sredna Gora, near the Struma valley in the First Bulgarian Empire, in the generations after the official Christianization of the Bulgarians under Prince Boris I. The later Church Slavonic lives present him as a herdsman in youth. After the death of his parents he distributed what property he had to the poor and entered monastic life, taking the name John (Ivan). He is not recorded as having married or having children, and the entire subsequent tradition treats him as a celibate monk and hermit.

Seeking a stricter eremitical life, he left the coenobium and lived as a solitary, first in the mountains of his native region and on Vitosha, then deep in the Rila massif of southwestern Bulgaria. There he occupied a cave (and, in later narrative, a hollow tree), combining fasting, prayer, and manual work. Disciples gathered around him, and their settlement became the nucleus of Rila Monastery, which grew into the foremost monastery of medieval and later Bulgarian Orthodoxy. He belonged to Eastern Orthodox monasticism rather than to any named Western religious order, and he never held episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office.

His reputation reached the Bulgarian court. Tsar Peter I (reigned 927–969) is said to have sought a meeting and to have sent food and gold; John accepted only a little food, returned the treasure, and sent spiritual counsel. A short Testament (Zavet) addressed to his disciples, stressing poverty, humility, obedience, and remaining in the wilderness, is attributed to him and is counted among the earliest original works of Bulgarian literature. He died on 18 August 946 in his hermitage in the Rila Mountains and was first buried there.

His relics were later translated to Sredets (modern Sofia) in the later tenth century, taken for a time to Hungary, returned, then in the late twelfth century moved to the new capital Tarnovo, and in 1469 brought back to Rila Monastery, where they remain a focus of pilgrimage. Veneration arose from monastic and popular cult rather than from a Western-style papal canonization or beatification. The Bulgarian Orthodox Church commemorates him on 18 August (repose), 19 October (translation of the relics), and 1 July (return of the relics to Rila). He is honoured as the patron saint of Bulgaria and of the Bulgarian people.
