Biography

Short Description

Saint John of Tobolsk, known in the world as Ioann Maximovich, was born in 1651 in Nizhyn, a regiment town of the Cossack Hetmanate in Left-bank Ukraine, to an Orthodox gentry family. His father is named in church lives as Maxim Vasilievich Maximovich. In the later seventeenth century he studied at the Kiev-Mohyla Collegium, then the principal Orthodox academy of the East Slavic world, and after completing the course he taught Latin there. Around 1680 he received monastic tonsure and ordination, remaining tied to the academic and monastic life of Kiev, including service as prefect of the academy. Orthodox tradition presents him as combining book learning with an austere personal rule rather than as a court cleric.

From Kiev he was called to monastic and then episcopal office in the Chernigov region. He became archimandrite of the Eletsky Dormition Monastery at Chernigov and in 1697 was consecrated Archbishop of Chernigov. In that see he encouraged schools, including a Slavic-Latin school, cared for diocesan clergy and the poor, and wrote or translated works of moral and ascetic theology. The most widely read of these is the Iliotropion (Heliotropion), an adaptation of a Western treatise on aligning the human will with the will of God, which he rendered for Orthodox readers in Slavonic and which was printed at Chernigov in the early eighteenth century. He also composed liturgical and homiletic texts. His reputation in Little Russia was that of a learned and charitable hierarch.

In 1711 he was named Metropolitan of Tobolsk and All Siberia and travelled to that vast northern diocese of the Tsardom of Russia. The appointment followed the earlier tenure of Metropolitan Philotheos (Leshchinsky), who had turned to missions among indigenous Siberian peoples. In Tobolsk John continued almsgiving, supported missionary work across Siberia, and lived with notable personal simplicity. Later accounts describe him as accessible to the poor and as a man of prayer. The Siberian see was among the most difficult in the Russian Church, covering enormous distances and a mixed population of Russian settlers and native nations. He is not recorded as having held the office of patriarch, nor any Western-style religious order; he was an Eastern Orthodox monk-bishop.

He died in Tobolsk on 10 June 1715 and was buried in the cathedral complex of the city, associated with the Saint Sophia (Dormition) Cathedral. Local veneration as a wonderworker developed over the following two centuries. The Russian Orthodox Church glorified him as a saint in 1916, in the last years of the Synodal period, and his principal feast is kept on 10 June (Julian). He is remembered as a missionary metropolitan, spiritual writer, and intercessor connected with Siberia. He belongs to the Maximovich family from which, in a later generation, came Saint John (Maximovitch) of Shanghai and San Francisco; the two men are distinct historical figures. Precise details of some early appointments and of individual miracle stories remain those of church tradition, but the outline of his education, Chernigov episcopate, Siberian metropolitanate, death in 1715, and glorification in 1916 is firmly established in Orthodox hagiography and standard reference works.
