Biography

Short Description

John of Valence (Jean de Valence) was a Cistercian monk and bishop of Valence in the Dauphiné of southeastern France in the mid-twelfth century. He was born in Lyon, then a major archiepiscopal city on the Rhône. No reliable source preserves an exact year of birth. In early adulthood he belonged to the cathedral chapter of Lyon as a canon. Drawn to the Cistercian reform that had begun at Cîteaux and was then spreading through new foundations in the Kingdom of Burgundy and adjoining lands, he left the secular clergy and entered the Cistercian abbey of Bonnevaux (Bona Vallis) in the Dauphiné, a house founded from Cîteaux in the early twelfth century.

At Bonnevaux he lived under the Cistercian interpretation of the Rule of Saint Benedict. In 1141 the church of Valence, whose see was vacant, elected him bishop. Traditional accounts of his life state that he was reluctant to leave monastic enclosure and accepted the office only under pressure. He held the bishopric of Valence for about five years, from 1141 until his death. The twelfth-century Church in the Rhône valley was still shaped by Gregorian reform, disputes over ecclesiastical property, and the hope that monk-bishops would bring cloistered discipline to diocesan government.

Later liturgical and hagiographical notices remember him for personal austerity, pastoral care, and especially charity toward the poor. Surviving evidence for his episcopate is thin: he does not figure as a major actor in the conciliar or political record of the 1140s, and there is no contemporary vita of independent historical weight. What remains are brief Cistercian and diocesan traditions, later summaries, and his entry in martyrologies.

He died in 1146, almost certainly at Valence. A local cult formed around his memory and he came to be commemorated as a saint in the diocese. The Roman Martyrology records him on 8 April at Valence in Gaul as a bishop distinguished for charity to the poor. He was not the subject of a well-documented papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; his recognition belongs to the older pattern of local episcopal cults later received into wider calendars. Historical knowledge of his life therefore remains limited and should not be expanded beyond these attested outlines.
