Biography

Short Description

John Payne was an English Catholic priest and martyr of the Elizabethan penal times. He was born in 1532 at Peterborough in Northamptonshire. Surviving records say little about his parentage or childhood, but he converted to Catholicism as an adult and, as the laws against recusants tightened, left England to train for the priesthood. In 1574 he entered the English College at Douai in the Spanish Netherlands, the seminary founded to supply priests for the English mission. He was ordained at Cambrai on 7 April 1576 and later that year returned to England with Cuthbert Mayne, another future martyr.

Payne’s missionary work was concentrated in Essex. He found shelter at Ingatestone Hall, the home of the recusant Lady Anne Petre, widow of Sir William Petre, and from that base he celebrated Mass in secret, administered the sacraments, and ministered to Catholics who faced fines, imprisonment, and worse for refusing conformity to the Church of England. He was arrested in 1577 but released, and he resumed his ministry for several more years. In 1581 he was arrested again on the information of the government spy George Eliot, the same informer who had betrayed Edmund Campion. Eliot accused Payne of conspiring to murder Queen Elizabeth I, a charge Payne denied, insisting that his only purpose in England was the spiritual care of Catholics.

He was tried at Chelmsford, convicted of high treason under statutes that made the presence of a Catholic priest in England a capital crime, and sentenced to hanging, drawing, and quartering. On 2 April 1582 he was executed at Chelmsford. Contemporary accounts describe him as meeting death with composure, praying for the queen and for those who condemned him. Because of the manner of execution, no verified burial place is recorded.

Payne was beatified by Pope Leo XIII on 29 December 1886 among a group of English Reformation martyrs and was canonized by Pope Paul VI on 25 October 1970 as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. His individual feast is kept on 2 April, the anniversary of his death; he is also commemorated on 25 October with the other Forty Martyrs. His life illustrates the risks taken by seminary priests who returned to England to serve recusant communities during one of the most dangerous periods of the penal laws.
