Biography

Short Description

Blessed John Righi, known in Italian as Giovanni Righi and also called Giovanni da Fabriano, was an Observant Franciscan friar of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. He was born in 1469 at Fabriano in the Marche, then part of the Papal States in central Italy. Drawn to the poverty and penitential life associated with Saint Francis of Assisi, he entered the Order of Friars Minor of the Observance, the reform branch of the Franciscans that in that period insisted on a stricter reading of the Rule than was customary among the Conventuals. The Observant movement was strong in the Marche, and Righi’s vocation belongs to that regional world of reformed convents, itinerant preachers, and hermits living under Franciscan obedience.

After profession he embraced an unusually austere form of the Franciscan life. In time he obtained permission to live as a hermit while remaining a member of the order, withdrawing to a hermitage connected with the Franciscan presence at Camerino, also in the Marche. There he spent decades in prayer, fasting, night vigils, and manual work, in the eremitical tradition that had always existed alongside conventual community life in the Franciscan family. Later hagiographical accounts, which are the principal sources for his inner life, describe severe corporal penances and a reputation among local people for spiritual counsel, prophecy, and miraculous help. He was sought out despite his preference for solitude, a pattern familiar in the lives of other Observant hermits of the same region and century.

Righi died at Camerino on 8 March 1539. A local cult formed around his memory and tomb and was maintained in Franciscan and civic devotion in the Marche for centuries. In 1903 Pope Pius X confirmed that long-standing public cult, an act which in the canonical practice of the time amounted to beatification (confirmatio cultus) for a figure of the pre-modern period. He has not been canonized. His liturgical memorial is kept on 8 March, the anniversary of his death, in some Franciscan and local calendars. No substantial body of writings by Righi himself is known to survive, and the biographical tradition depends on later notices and on the materials assembled for the confirmation of his cult.

Outside Franciscan martyrologies and regional Italian devotion he remains an obscure figure. What can be said with reasonable historical caution is that he represents the eremitical, penitential strand of Observant Franciscanism in the Marche on the eve of the Reformation and of the Catholic Reform, a type of holiness rooted in a particular landscape of small towns, reformed friaries, and mountain hermitages rather than in high ecclesiastical office or a large written legacy.
