Biography

Short Description

John Scholasticus, also known as John of Antioch and as John III of Constantinople, was a sixth-century lawyer, priest, and patriarch of Constantinople. He was born at Sirimis in the region of Cyrrhus in Syria, in the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire. Trained in civil law, he practiced as an advocate at Antioch, which earned him the designation Scholasticus, the period term for a professional jurist. He later received holy orders in the Church of Antioch and was sent to the imperial capital as apocrisiarius, the official representative of the patriarch of Antioch at the court of Constantinople. That combination of legal learning and ecclesiastical office made him a prominent clerical figure in the later years of the emperor Justinian I.

In 565 Justinian deposed Patriarch Eutychius of Constantinople, who had resisted the emperor’s late theological decree on the incorruptibility of Christ’s body, a teaching associated with aphthartodocetism. John was chosen in Eutychius’s place and was installed as patriarch on 12 April 565, becoming the third patriarch of Constantinople to bear the name John. Justinian died later that year, and John took part in the accession of Justin II, whom he crowned. The early reign of Justin II was marked by a more conciliatory imperial policy toward the anti-Chalcedonian (Miaphysite) communities of the East, and John’s patriarchate unfolded against that shifting political and doctrinal background. After John’s death the previously deposed Eutychius was restored to the patriarchal throne.

John’s lasting importance lies above all in canon law. He compiled a systematic collection of ecclesiastical canons known as the Synagoge (or Syntagma) of Fifty Titles, arranging the canons of the Apostles and of the principal early councils—including Nicaea, Ancyra, Neocaesarea, Gangra, Antioch, Laodicea, Constantinople, Ephesus, Chalcedon, and Serdica—under topical headings rather than in purely chronological sequence. He also assembled a companion collection of eighty-seven chapters drawn from the Novels of Justinian that concerned the Church. These works became foundational for the Byzantine nomocanon tradition, in which sacred canons and imperial church legislation were read together, and they influenced later compilers, including the tradition associated with the Nomocanon of Photius.

As patriarch he administered the Church of Constantinople until his death in 577. He is remembered in historical and legal literature as a principal architect of early Byzantine canon-law collections rather than as a widely culted saint; no securely attested feast day, patronage, or formal canonization is attached to him in the major calendars. His career illustrates the close interweaving of legal expertise, imperial theology, and patriarchal office in sixth-century Constantinople.
