Biography

Short Description

Little is known of the early life of John Stone. He enters the historical record as a member of the Austin Friars, the Order of Saint Augustine, at their house in Canterbury in Kent during the reign of Henry VIII. Contemporary and near-contemporary notices describe him as a doctor of theology, which implies a substantial academic formation at an Augustinian studium or a university, though neither the place nor the date of those studies is recorded. By the later 1530s he was a senior figure in the Canterbury community. No reliable source preserves his year or place of birth beyond the fact that he was English.

The English Reformation under Henry VIII combined a royal claim to supremacy over the Church in England with the suppression of religious houses. After the Act of Supremacy of 1534, communities were required to acknowledge the king as Supreme Head of the Church of England. When the Canterbury Austin Friars were dealt with in the course of the dissolution of the monasteries, most of the house submitted. Stone refused to accept the king's spiritual supremacy. That refusal was treated as treason. He was arrested, taken from Canterbury, and imprisoned, including a period in the Tower of London. Notes associated with Thomas Cromwell show that the crown took a direct interest in what was to be done with the Austin friar of Canterbury.

After about a year in custody he was sent back to Canterbury for execution, a choice of place meant to make an example of him before the local population. On 27 December 1539 he was hanged, drawn, and quartered at the Dane John in Canterbury. Later Catholic tradition, drawing on sixteenth-century Augustinian writers, relates that during imprisonment he received a heavenly consolation or heard a voice strengthening him not to yield. That detail cannot be corroborated from official records; it belongs to the early hagiographical memory of his death rather than to the surviving state papers. His remains after a traitor’s execution were not given a recorded burial.

Stone was beatified by Pope Leo XIII in 1886 among a group of English Reformation martyrs and was canonized on 25 October 1970 by Pope Paul VI as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. He is commemorated with those martyrs, whose feast is kept on 25 October (and in England also in connection with the wider celebration of the English Martyrs). His cult is that of a religious who would not transfer ecclesiastical allegiance from the papacy to the Tudor crown. Beyond the circumstances of his refusal, imprisonment, and death, the documentary record of his life remains sparse, as is typical for many religious of his rank whose names survive principally because of their martyrdom.
