Biography

Short Description

John Sullivan was born in Dublin on 8 May 1861 into a prominent Anglo-Irish family. His father, Sir Edward Sullivan, was a leading barrister who later became Lord Chancellor of Ireland and a baronet, and belonged to the Church of Ireland; his mother, Elizabeth Josephine Baily, was a Catholic. Baptized in the Church of Ireland, he was raised in his father’s Protestant faith. He was educated at Portora Royal School in Enniskillen and at Trinity College Dublin, where he studied classics and law, and was called to the Irish Bar in the mid-1880s. In his early adult years he was known in Dublin society for elegance of dress and manner, and he practised as a barrister while also travelling on the Continent, including in Italy and Greece.

After a period of spiritual searching he was received into the Roman Catholic Church in December 1896 at the Jesuit church of St Francis Xavier on Gardiner Street in Dublin. In 1900, at about the age of thirty-nine, he entered the Society of Jesus at St Stanislaus College, Tullabeg. He completed Jesuit formation, including studies in philosophy and theology at houses such as Stonyhurst and Milltown Park, and was ordained a priest in 1907. Most of his remaining life was spent at Clongowes Wood College in County Kildare, where he taught and served as spiritual father to the students. His later years were marked by severe personal austerity, long prayer, and a simplicity of dress and manner that contrasted sharply with his earlier social reputation.

Sullivan became widely known for pastoral care of the sick and the poor. He visited hospitals and private homes, often travelling by bicycle, and many accounts of physical and spiritual healings were attributed to his prayers and blessings during his lifetime. He died in Dublin on 19 February 1933 after a short illness, at St Vincent’s Hospital. He was first buried in the Jesuit cemetery at Clongowes Wood College; in 1960 his remains were translated to St Francis Xavier Church on Gardiner Street, Dublin, where his tomb became a place of pilgrimage.

The cause for his beatification advanced in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Pope Francis declared him Venerable in 2014. A miracle attributed to his intercession was subsequently approved, and he was beatified in Dublin on 13 May 2017, with Cardinal Angelo Amato presiding as representative of Pope Francis. He has not been canonized. His liturgical memorial is kept on 8 May. He is remembered especially for conversion of life, Jesuit simplicity, and ministry to the suffering.
