Biography

Short Description

John the Exarch was a medieval Bulgarian cleric, scholar, and translator associated with the Preslav Literary School in the First Bulgarian Empire at the end of the ninth century and the beginning of the tenth. He worked in the Christian literary culture that developed after the baptism of Bulgaria under Boris I and reached a high point under Tsar Simeon I. Neither his year nor place of birth, nor the date, place, or circumstances of his death, is recorded in surviving sources. Almost everything that can be said about him is inferred from his writings and from the later manuscript tradition of Old Church Slavonic literature. He belongs to the generation of Slavic men of letters who, after the collapse of the Moravian mission of Cyril and Methodius, helped establish a vernacular theological and scientific literature in Bulgaria.

His principal original compilation is the Shestodnev (Hexameron), an account of the six days of Creation. The work draws extensively on the Homilies on the Hexaemeron of Basil of Caesarea, together with material from Severian of Gabala and other Greek authorities, including Aristotelian natural philosophy, which John adapted and commented upon in Old Church Slavonic. The Shestodnev mixes theology with descriptions of the physical world, the human body, animals, plants, and the heavens. It also contains a well-known eulogy of Tsar Simeon, comparing the ruler to a bee that gathers learning from many flowers. The treatise thus served both as a vehicle of Byzantine learning and as a statement of the intellectual ambitions of the Bulgarian court and church.

John also produced a Slavonic version of substantial portions of John of Damascus’s Fountain of Knowledge, especially the philosophical chapters known in Slavic as Nebesa (Heaven) and related to the Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith. Through this translation he introduced Greek philosophical terminology and Orthodox dogmatic theology to Slavic readers. A homily on the Transfiguration has likewise been attributed to him. These texts circulated for centuries among South and East Slavs; numerous medieval manuscripts of the Shestodnev and of the Damascene translation survive from Bulgaria, Serbia, and Rus’. Together they helped fix a theological and scientific vocabulary in Old Church Slavonic.

The epithet Exarch attached to his name has been explained in several ways. In the Eastern Church an exarch could be a bishop with provincial authority or a representative of a higher see, and some historians therefore regard John as a high-ranking official of the Bulgarian Church, perhaps a bishop or an assistant to the Bulgarian archbishop. Others treat the title as honorific or as referring to his role as interpreter of Scripture and teacher. There is no reliable evidence that he held the office of patriarch, which the Bulgarian Church obtained only later, nor that he was Bishop of Rome. Whether he was a monk or a married priest is not documented. Unlike several contemporaries such as Clement of Ohrid, he does not appear in the principal Orthodox calendars as a canonized saint with an assigned feast day, and no medieval vita or official cult is securely attested. His importance rests on the writings themselves, which remain among the foundational monuments of medieval Bulgarian literature.
