Biography

Short Description

John the Merciful, also called John the Almsgiver and in Greek Ioannes ho Eleemon, served as Chalcedonian Patriarch of Alexandria in the early seventh century. He was born in the mid-sixth century at Amathus on Cyprus, the son of Epiphanius, a patrician who governed the island. He belonged to a wealthy provincial elite. He married and had children; after the deaths of his wife and children he turned his household and fortune toward prayer and almsgiving. The principal early biographies present him as a layman of high rank when Emperor Heraclius appointed him patriarch of Alexandria in 610, succeeding the previous Chalcedonian occupant of that see.

Alexandria was then a vast, confessionally divided city, home to a Chalcedonian minority church and a larger Coptic population, and swollen with refugees as Sasanian armies overran the Levant. John organized charity on a scale that impressed contemporaries. The Life written by Leontius of Neapolis in Cyprus in the mid-seventh century, drawing on an earlier account linked to John Moschus and Sophronius of Jerusalem, describes him as keeping registers of the poor, whom he named his masters and fellow helpers on the road to salvation. He founded or supported hospitals, hostels for strangers, and houses for the destitute, ransomed captives, and dispatched money and supplies to Jerusalem after the Persian capture of the city in 614 so that churches might be restored and survivors fed. Recurring stories tell of a beggar who returned again and again in different disguises and was never refused, of a merchant three times ruined by shipwreck whom the patriarch restocked, and of church plate sold when alms funds ran dry.

The same sources depict a patriarch who lived austerely, avoided display in dress and table, and clashed at times with fiscal officials and with clergy who thought his generosity imprudent or who practiced simony. He is portrayed as relatively mild in a city torn by the Chalcedonian schism, though he remained a representative of imperial orthodoxy. In 619 the Persian invasion of Egypt ended his tenure. He withdrew to Cyprus and died at Amathus later that year, by tradition on 11 November. He was buried in his native city, according to Cypriot tradition at the church of Saint Tychon.

A cult developed rapidly in Cyprus and in Byzantine territories that remained under imperial control. Relics were later taken to Constantinople and, in the Middle Ages and early modern period, portions were claimed by churches in the Latin West, notably in Venice and, from the seventeenth century, in the cathedral of Bratislava. The hospital founded by Amalfitan merchants in Jerusalem in the eleventh century was at first dedicated to John the Almsgiver before being placed under John the Baptist; from that association he became a patron of the Knights Hospitaller and of the later Order of Malta. The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates him on 12 November and the Roman Catholic Church on 23 January. He is invoked especially for the poor and for the Hospitallers, and the seventh-century lives make him one of the most fully documented charitable bishops of the early Byzantine world.
