Biography

Short Description

John Tornike, known in Georgian as Ioane Tornike and in Byzantine sources as Tornikios, was a tenth-century Georgian aristocrat who combined a distinguished military career with a later vocation as an Orthodox monk. He came from the Tornikios family, a noble lineage active in the Georgian lands of Tao-Klarjeti and also represented among the Byzantine aristocracy. In the service of David III of Tao, who held the Byzantine court title of kuropalates, Tornike occupied the rank of eristavi, a senior provincial and military office. Georgian historical writing portrays him as a capable commander in the wars and politics of the southwest Caucasian principalities, which in that century stood in close, often allied, relation to Constantinople.

Sometime in the 970s, after years of secular command, Tornike left the court of Tao and took monastic vows on Mount Athos, receiving the name John. He attached himself to the Georgian monastic colony led by John the Iberian, a monk of high spiritual reputation whose son Euthymius would later become a celebrated translator and abbot. At that date the Georgians on Athos still lived in a relatively modest settlement; they had not yet obtained the fully organized monastery that would be called Iviron. Tornike’s presence among them linked the Athonite Georgians to the military and financial resources of Tao.

The revolt of Bardas Skleros against Basil II in the late 970s drew Tornike back into the world. Basil II, whose hold on the empire was still insecure, requested troops from David of Tao. David sent Tornike at the head of a Georgian force. Leaving the Holy Mountain with the consent of his monastic superiors, Tornike campaigned in Asia Minor and in 979 contributed decisively to the defeat of Skleros. Byzantine and Georgian accounts agree that the Georgian contingent played an important part in restoring imperial control. In the aftermath, Basil II rewarded David with extensive lands in eastern Anatolia, and Tornike himself received honors and a large share of booty, including precious liturgical vessels and funds.

Tornike then returned to Athos and applied his winnings to the foundation of a permanent Georgian coenobium. Iviron Monastery, whose name means of the Iberians (Georgians), was built and richly endowed in the years around 979 and 980. John the Iberian became its first abbot; Tornike remained in the brotherhood as a senior monk and benefactor rather than as abbot. He died at Iviron in 985. The monastery he helped to establish endured as the chief Georgian house on Athos and as a center of Georgian literary culture. Details of Tornike’s birth, possible earlier family life, and personal spirituality are not preserved in the surviving sources; what can be known of him is almost entirely the public story of the general who became a monk and the monk who briefly became a general again in order to secure both an emperor’s throne and a monastery’s future.
