Biography

Short Description

John Uroš, known in Greek as Ioannes Ouresis Doukas Palaiologos and in Serbian as Jovan Uroš, was a late medieval ruler of Thessaly and the last member of the Nemanjić dynasty to hold imperial style in that region. He was the son of Simeon Uroš Palaiologos, a half-brother of the Serbian emperor Stefan Dušan, and of Thomais Orsini, daughter of John II Orsini of Epirus. Through this parentage he combined the Serbian royal house with Byzantine aristocratic lines of Doukas, Angelos, and Palaiologos, a mixture reflected in the names used in documents associated with him. His father’s realm, formed after Dušan’s death in the mid-fourteenth century, covered parts of Epirus, Thessaly, and neighboring districts, with important centers at Kastoria and later Trikala. A precise year and place of birth are not securely attested in the surviving sources.

In the early 1370s, after Simeon Uroš’s death, John Uroš succeeded as ruler of Thessaly, with Trikala as the principal seat of the dynasty in that period. Contemporary and later accounts present him as a relatively weak sovereign whose authority was constrained by local magnates and by the general fragmentation of power in the southern Balkans. Around 1373 he laid down secular rule, ceding effective control to a relative, Alexios Angelos Philanthropenos. He then entered the monastic life under the name Joasaph. He is not recorded as having married or as having left children; succession in Thessaly passed outside his immediate line, and the Nemanjić imperial claim there came to an end. His sister Maria Angelina Doukaina Palaiologina married Thomas Preljubović and later Esau de’ Buondelmonti and was a prominent figure in the politics of Ioannina.

As the monk Joasaph, John Uroš attached himself to the monastic settlements on the rock pillars of Meteora in Thessaly. He is remembered as a principal ktetor, or founder-patron, of the Monastery of the Transfiguration (the Great Meteoron), in association with the earlier work of Athanasios the Meteorite, who had organized that community in the mid-fourteenth century. Endowments and building activity in this period helped establish Meteora as a major Orthodox monastic center. Joasaph spent several decades as a monk through the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, a time when Thessaly came under Ottoman domination while the Meteora houses continued to function. He held no patriarchal or papal office.

He died in the early 1420s; the years 1422 and 1423 both appear in the scholarly literature, and he almost certainly died at Meteora. In the Orthodox Church he is venerated as the Venerable Joasaph of Meteora and is commemorated together with Saint Athanasios of Meteora, commonly on 20 April. His imperial origin, long monastic career, and role in endowing the Great Meteoron made him a figure of local hagiographical importance. Historical knowledge of his life remains limited: much of what can be said rests on later monastic tradition, a small number of charters and inscriptions, and the political narrative of Thessaly in the decades after Stefan Dušan.
