Biography

Short Description

John Wang Rui (Chinese: 王瑞) was a Chinese Catholic seminarian martyred at Taiyuan in Shanxi during the Boxer Rebellion. He was born in 1885 and was about fifteen years old when he died. He was studying for the priesthood in the seminary of the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Shanxi, a mission then entrusted to the Order of Friars Minor. Catholicism had taken root in parts of Shanxi over the course of the nineteenth century, with Chinese families supplying both lay faithful and candidates for the clergy, even as local tensions with non-Christian neighbors and with Qing officials periodically flared into violence.

In 1900 the Yihetuan movement, known in the West as the Boxers, swept through northern China with a program that mixed anti-foreign feeling, folk religion, and open hostility to Christianity. Shanxi was among the provinces most heavily affected. On 9 July 1900 the provincial governor Yuxian had a large group of Catholics in Taiyuan seized and put to death. The victims included Franciscan bishops Gregory Grassi and Francis Fogolla, several Franciscan priests, seven Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, and a number of Chinese seminarians and lay people attached to the mission. John Wang Rui was one of those seminarians. Catholic accounts of the Taiyuan massacre record that the prisoners were pressed to abandon their faith and that they refused; they were executed the same day.

Individual documentation for the younger Chinese victims is thinner than for the foreign missionaries, whose deaths were reported at length in contemporary mission correspondence. What is consistently attested for Wang Rui is his identity as a teenage seminarian of the Shanxi mission, his refusal to apostatize, and his death with the Taiyuan group on 9 July 1900. He was beatified by Pope Pius XII on 24 November 1946 together with the other martyrs of that group, and he was canonized by Pope John Paul II on 1 October 2000 as one of the 120 Martyr Saints of China. The Church keeps their collective memorial on 9 July.

The canonization of 2000 placed figures such as Wang Rui within a longer history of Chinese Catholic witness stretching from the seventeenth century to the twentieth. His case illustrates both the youth of some of those killed in 1900 and the fact that a substantial share of the Boxer-era martyrs were Chinese rather than foreign. Beyond his age, clerical status, and the circumstances of the Taiyuan executions, further personal details—family background, exact birthplace, and the precise course of his capture—are not firmly established in the publicly available historical record.
