Biography

Short Description

John Yi Yun-il (Korean: 이윤일 요한) was a nineteenth-century Korean Catholic layman, catechist, and martyr of the Joseon dynasty. He was born in 1822 in Hongju, in Chungcheong Province. A farmer by occupation, he belonged to the Catholic community that had taken root in Korea in the late eighteenth century through lay initiative and had survived repeated official persecutions. He married and had children, supporting his household by agricultural labor while remaining active in the life of the Church at a time when the practice of Christianity was illegal.

As a catechist he instructed others in Catholic doctrine when foreign clergy were scarce or absent and when association with the faith could bring arrest and death. Korean Catholicism in this period was often sustained by lay teachers who prepared candidates for baptism, kept village congregations together, and handed on prayers and teaching in secret. Hagiographical accounts present Yi Yun-il as a man of simple piety whose family life and work in the fields were joined to this pastoral responsibility. He is remembered among the Korean martyrs specifically as a married lay catechist rather than as a priest or member of a religious order.

The Byeongin persecution, which began in 1866 under the regency of Heungseon Daewongun, was among the most severe anti-Christian campaigns of the Joseon era. Missionaries were executed and large numbers of Korean Catholics were hunted, imprisoned, and killed. Yi Yun-il was arrested and taken to Daegu, the principal city of Gyeongsang Province. There he was interrogated and tortured in an effort to make him renounce Christianity. He refused to apostatize. On 21 January 1867 he was beheaded at Daegu. He was about forty-five years old. He is counted among the last of those later canonized as the 103 Korean Martyrs to die in that wave of persecution.

Yi Yun-il was among the Korean martyrs beatified by Pope Pius XI on 5 July 1925. On 6 May 1984, during an apostolic visit to Seoul, Pope John Paul II canonized him together with 102 companions, known collectively as Saint Andrew Kim Taegon, Paul Chong Hasang, and Companions, or the 103 Korean Martyrs. Their principal feast in the General Roman Calendar is 20 September; Yi Yun-il is also commemorated on 21 January, the anniversary of his death. He is venerated as a lay witness to the faith, a husband and father, and a catechist who died rather than abandon the Church.
