Biography

Short Description

Jón Ögmundsson, known in English as Saint John of Hólar and in Old Norse as Jón Ǫgmundarson, was born in 1052 at Breiðabólstaður in Fljótshlíð in southern Iceland, during the Icelandic Commonwealth. Christianity had been adopted by law at the Althing around the year 1000, but church institutions were still young and many older customs survived. Jón, the son of a man named Ögmundr and a member of a respected family, received a clerical education in Iceland and as a young man traveled abroad to study, spending time in Scandinavia and coming into contact with the Latin Church in the Nordic kingdoms and beyond. He was ordained a priest and acquired a reputation for learning, personal austerity, and a strict view of clerical celibacy, at a time when marriage among Icelandic priests remained widespread.

In 1106 a second Icelandic diocese was created for the Northern Quarter, with its seat at Hólar in Hjaltadalur, so that northern Icelanders would no longer depend only on the southern see of Skálholt. Jón was elected the first bishop of Hólar. He went to Lund in Denmark, which had recently become the archiepiscopal see for the Nordic churches, and was consecrated by Archbishop Asser. Back in Iceland he organized the new bishopric, developed the cathedral at Hólar, and founded a cathedral school that became a major center of Latin and liturgical education. He brought in teachers from abroad, including Gísli Finnason from Götaland, and trained clergy in grammar, chant, and doctrine. Medieval Icelandic tradition credits him with a determined effort to suppress remaining pagan practice and sorcery, and with replacing weekday names derived from the Norse gods with the numerical and ecclesiastical names still used in Icelandic.

During some fifteen years as bishop he sought to align Icelandic church life more closely with wider Latin norms, including liturgical regularity and clerical discipline. The principal narrative source for his life, Jóns saga helga, which derives from a Latin vita by the monk Gunnlaugr Leifsson of Þingeyrar, portrays him as chaste, charitable to the poor, and severe toward pre-Christian custom, and as a teacher who shaped a generation of northern clergy. He died at Hólar on 23 April 1121 and was buried at his cathedral.

In the later twelfth century a cult formed around his tomb, and miracles were reported. In 1200 the Althing recognized his sanctity and his relics were translated at Hólar, a local canonization of the kind then still customary in the Nordic world. He was not canonized by a pope, but he has been venerated in Iceland as a saint, with his chief feast on 23 April. Together with Saint Þorlákr of Skálholt he is among the principal native saints of medieval Iceland, and the school and diocese he established at Hólar remained central to the church in northern Iceland throughout the Middle Ages.
