Biography

Short Description

Saint Jonah (Iona) of Novgorod was a fifteenth-century archbishop of Novgorod the Great and Pskov and is venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. He was born in the city of Novgorod, then capital of the Novgorod Republic, at a date that has not been preserved in chronicles or in his Life. His parents, described only as pious, died while he was still a child. He was raised by a devout widow who brought him up in the Orthodox faith. According to the hagiographical tradition, while still a boy he met Saint Michael of Klops, a fool-for-Christ of the Novgorod region, who addressed him by his baptismal name Ivan (John) and predicted that he would become Archbishop of Great Novgorod. That anecdote is the principal story surviving from his childhood and should be read as part of the later saint’s Life rather than as an independently documented event.

Drawn to monasticism from youth, he entered the Otenskaya (Otnya) Monastery of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos in the Novgorod countryside. There he received the tonsure and the name Jonah. He spent many years in ascetic discipline, liturgical prayer, fasting, and the copying of books, a typical occupation of literate Russian monks in that century. He did not seek high office. In 1458, after the death of Archbishop Euthymius II, the clergy and people of Novgorod elected him archbishop. He went to Moscow and was consecrated by Metropolitan Jonah of Kiev and All Rus’. He then governed the see of Novgorod and Pskov for twelve years.

His tenure fell in a period of growing pressure from the Grand Principality of Moscow upon the still-independent Novgorod Republic, under Vasily II and the young Ivan III. Contemporary and later sources portray him as a meek pastor who cared for the poor, supported churches and monasteries, and sought to keep peace among his flock. He remained attached to the Otenskaya Monastery and continued to benefit it. Precise administrative acts are only sparsely recorded in the chronicles; much of the portrait of his character comes from the conventional language of his Life.

Jonah reposed on 5 November 1470 and was buried at the Otenskaya Monastery, the house of his tonsure. Local veneration began after his death. His relics were regarded as incorrupt and as a source of healings. In the sixteenth century his cult was received more widely in the Russian Church, in the same era in which Metropolitan Macarius of Moscow and the Moscow councils were extending the calendar of Russian saints. He is commemorated on 5 November, the day of his repose, and also in the synaxis of the saints of Novgorod. No marriage or children are recorded; from youth his life was monastic and, later, episcopal. He was never Patriarch, nor Bishop of Rome.
