Biography

Short Description

Josaphat Joseph Kotsylovsky was born on 3 March 1876 in the village of Pakoshivka (Pakoszówka) in the Lemko region of Galicia, then a crown land of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and today in southeastern Poland. He was raised in a Ukrainian Greek Catholic family in a borderland of mixed language and rite. After gymnasium studies in Galicia he was sent for ecclesiastical formation to Rome, where Eastern Catholic students were trained at the Pontifical Greek College of St. Athanasius. He was ordained a priest in 1907. A few years later he entered the Order of Saint Basil the Great, the principal monastic order of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, taking the religious name Josaphat after Saint Josaphat Kuntsevych, the seventeenth-century archbishop martyred for fidelity to the Union of Brest. After monastic profession he served in pastoral and community roles among the Basilians in Galicia.

In the midst of the First World War he was named bishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Eparchy of Przemyśl (Peremyshl), a historic see whose faithful lived on both sides of what later became the Polish–Soviet frontier. He was consecrated bishop in 1917. His long episcopate ran through the collapse of Austria-Hungary, the Polish–Ukrainian struggle over eastern Galicia, the interwar Second Polish Republic, successive Soviet and German occupations, and the first years of communist rule. He worked to sustain clergy formation, parish life, and the Eastern Catholic identity of his flock amid political pressure, national conflict, and repeated changes of sovereignty. In the interwar Polish state the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church faced restrictions and disputes over property and language; Kotsylovsky defended the rights of his eparchy while remaining in communion with Rome.

After 1944–45 Soviet policy aimed at liquidating the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and folding its clergy and faithful into the Russian Orthodox Church. The so-called Synod of Lviv of 1946 purported to dissolve the Union of Brest. Bishop Kotsylovsky refused to break with the Holy See or to accept that “reunion.” He was arrested in 1946 by the Soviet security organs, imprisoned, and transferred to Kyiv. He died in prison there on 17 November 1947 as a result of the conditions of his detention. The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church has regarded his death as martyrdom for the Catholic faith and for the Eastern Catholic character of his people. His place of burial is not known with certainty and was likely an unmarked prison grave.

On 27 June 2001, during his apostolic visit to Ukraine, Pope John Paul II beatified Josaphat Kotsylovsky in Lviv together with a group of other bishops, priests, monks, and nuns of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church who had died under Soviet persecution. He is venerated as Blessed Josaphat Kotsylovsky, bishop and martyr, and is commemorated with the other blessed martyrs of Ukraine. He has not been canonized. His life is remembered as that of a Basilian monk-bishop who held the union with Rome through war, occupation, and the attempted destruction of his church.
