Biography
José Fernández de Ventosa was a Spanish Dominican priest and missionary martyred in nineteenth-century Tonkin. He was born in 1775 at Ventosa de la Cuesta in the province of Valladolid, in Old Castile. Little is recorded of his family or early years. He entered the Order of Preachers, completed the customary studies and novitiate in Spanish Dominican houses, and was ordained a priest. Like many friars of his province he volunteered for the East Asian missions, which the Dominicans had staffed from the Philippines and from Tonkin since the seventeenth century.
From the Dominican base in the Philippines he was sent on to the vicariate of Eastern Tonkin in northern Vietnam. There he spent decades in ordinary missionary work: administering the sacraments, instructing catechumens, and supporting Catholic villages that lived under recurring imperial bans on Christianity. In time he was named vicar provincial of the Dominican mission, sharing responsibility for the government of the vicariate and for the safety of his brethren during a period of mounting danger.
The reign of Emperor Minh Mạng brought one of the harshest waves of persecution in Vietnamese Catholic history. Foreign missionaries were singled out. In 1838 Fernández was arrested. After imprisonment he was condemned and executed by beheading on 24 July 1838 at Nam Định, one of many clergy and lay faithful put to death in those years.
He was beatified on 20 May 1906 by Pope Pius X among a group of martyrs of Tonkin and Annam, and was canonized on 19 June 1988 by Pope John Paul II together with 116 companions, collectively known as the Martyrs of Vietnam. Their common liturgical feast is 24 November. As members of that group they are invoked as patrons of Vietnam.
