Biography

Short Description

José Ferrer Adell, known in Capuchin religious life as Fray José de Alcora, was a Spanish Franciscan Capuchin priest martyred during the anticlerical violence of the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 28 February 1904 in l'Alcora, a municipality in the province of Castellón in the Valencian Community of eastern Spain, a town long associated with the manufacture of ceramics. He belonged to a generation of Spanish Catholics formed in the late Restoration period, when religious orders had recovered a public role after the nineteenth-century liberal disentailments yet already faced rising secularist and revolutionary currents. Attracted to the austere, popular Franciscanism of the Capuchins, he entered the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin and received the name that linked him to his birthplace, following the custom of that reform.

In the Capuchin province that served Valencia and the surrounding lands, Ferrer Adell completed the usual course of novitiate, philosophy, and theology and was ordained to the priesthood. Capuchin ministry in early twentieth-century Spain combined the choir office and personal poverty with missions, third-order direction, and the hearing of confessions among ordinary people. The proclamation of the Second Republic in 1931 brought a wave of church-burnings and legislative measures against religious congregations, creating an atmosphere of insecurity for friars even before open war. Ferrer Adell persevered in his vocation in this setting, living the Capuchin life of prayer and pastoral work in the Levante.

The outbreak of the Civil War in July 1936 placed large parts of eastern Spain, including Castellón, under Republican control. In the rearguard, uncontrolled militias and revolutionary committees targeted clergy and religious with particular ferocity; thousands were executed without trial in the summer and autumn of 1936. José Ferrer Adell was arrested in the course of this persecution and was killed on 30 August 1936 in Castellón de la Plana. He was thirty-two years of age. The Catholic Church has regarded his death, and those of many companions, as martyrdom in odium fidei, that is, motivated by hatred of the Christian faith and of the priestly and religious state.

After the war, causes of beatification were introduced for the Spanish martyrs of 1936-1939. José Ferrer Adell was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 11 March 2001 in Saint Peter's Square, Rome, as one of a large group of martyrs from the Valencian ecclesiastical sphere, a ceremony that at the time constituted the most numerous beatification in the history of the Church. He has not been canonized. His cult remains that of a blessed, observed especially among the Capuchins and in the dioceses of the former Kingdom of Valencia. He is not widely invoked as a patron of particular professions or places; his significance in Catholic memory is as a witness of religious fidelity during the Spanish persecution of the 1930s.
