Biography

Short Description

José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros was born on 26 October 1864 in Isnotú, a mountain village in the state of Trujillo in the Venezuelan Andes, the son of Benigno Hernández Manzaneda and Josefa Antonia Cisneros Mansilla. Raised in a devout Catholic household, he received his first schooling in his native region before being sent to Caracas, where he studied at the Colegio Villegas and later entered the Universidad Central de Venezuela. He received his medical degree in 1888. The Venezuelan government then granted him a scholarship for further training in Europe. From 1889 he worked in Paris in histology, physiology, pathology, and bacteriology, acquiring the laboratory methods then current in French medicine. On his return he brought scientific instruments and techniques that helped establish experimental medicine in Venezuela, and he is generally regarded as one of the founders of modern laboratory and physiological teaching in the country.

From the early 1890s until 1919 he taught at the Universidad Central de Venezuela, occupying chairs in histology and in normal and pathological physiology and helping to organize the university physiological laboratory. He published textbooks and papers, including a work on bacteriology, and maintained a medical practice that became legendary for its charity: he treated poor patients without fee and often purchased their medicines at his own expense, which led people to call him the doctor of the poor. He also took part in public-health work and attended the sick during epidemics in Caracas. Students and colleagues described him as a rigorous scientist and a reserved, carefully dressed man whose professional routine was bound up with daily Mass and personal prayer.

Hernández never married and lived in notable austerity. He was a member of the Third Order of Saint Francis and several times tried to leave secular life for the priesthood or the cloister. In 1908 he went to Italy and entered the Carthusian monastery of Farneta, near Lucca, as a novice; the severity of Carthusian observance and the climate damaged his already delicate health, and his superiors sent him home. A later stay in Rome, undertaken with the hope of preparing for ordination, likewise ended because of illness. He returned to teaching and practice in Caracas and came to understand these unsuccessful attempts as a vocation to remain a lay physician in the service of the sick.

On 29 June 1919, while walking in the La Pastora district of Caracas to fetch medicine for a patient, he was struck by an automobile and died of his injuries that day, aged fifty-four. He was buried in the Cementerio General del Sur; in 1975 his remains were transferred to the Church of Our Lady of Candelaria in Caracas, which became the main shrine of his cult. Devotion to him as a holy doctor spread quickly through Venezuela and into other parts of Latin America, accompanied by reports of healings. The cause of beatification advanced in the later twentieth century, and Pope John Paul II declared him Venerable in 1986. After the recognition of a miracle attributed to his intercession—the recovery of a Venezuelan child who had been shot in the head in 2017—Pope Francis authorized his beatification. Hernández was beatified in Caracas on 30 April 2021. He is invoked especially by physicians, medical students, the sick, and the poor, and he remains among the most popular religious figures in Venezuelan history.
