Biography

José María Díaz Sanjurjo was a Spanish Dominican friar, missionary bishop, and martyr, later numbered among the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam. He was born in 1818 in the parish of Santa Eulalia de Suevos, in the province of Lugo in Galicia. After entering the Order of Preachers he was ordained a priest and assigned to the Dominican Province of the Holy Rosary, the Spanish province that staffed missions in the Philippines and in mainland East Asia. Through that province he was sent to the apostolic vicariate of Central Tonkin, in what is now northern Vietnam, where Dominicans had long served Vietnamese Catholic communities.

In the late 1840s he was named titular bishop and coadjutor, and then vicar apostolic, of Central Tonkin. His ministry unfolded under Emperor Tự Đức, whose edicts against Christianity treated European missionaries as enemies of the state and exposed bishops, priests, catechists, and lay Catholics to arrest and death. Díaz Sanjurjo governed a Church that already included Vietnamese clergy and a substantial local laity. He continued to visit Christian settlements, administer confirmation and the other sacraments, and support indigenous priests and catechists while remaining a highly visible foreign prelate.

During the intensification of the persecution in the 1850s he was seized, imprisoned at Nam Định, and condemned. On 20 July 1857 he was executed by beheading. His coadjutor, the Dominican Melchor García Sampedro, was martyred the following year. Both deaths belonged to a much larger series of executions of Vietnamese and foreign Catholics in Tonkin and Cochinchina across the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Pope Pius X beatified Díaz Sanjurjo in 1906 among martyrs of Tonkin. On 19 June 1988 Pope John Paul II canonized him together with Saint Andrew Dũng-Lạc and companions. The group is commemorated on 24 November. He is remembered as a Dominican missionary bishop who remained with his flock under persecution and who sealed his office with martyrdom.
