Biography

Short Description

José María Peris Polo was a Spanish Catholic diocesan priest of the Diocese of Segorbe (today Segorbe-Castellón) who was killed in 1936 during the anticlerical violence of the Spanish Civil War and was later beatified as a martyr. He was born on 1 November 1889 in Cinctorres, a town in the interior of the province of Castellón in eastern Spain. He received his ecclesiastical education at the diocesan seminary of Segorbe and was ordained to the priesthood. His principal work was in that same seminary, where he served as a professor and subsequently as rector, responsible for the intellectual and spiritual formation of candidates for the priesthood.

As rector he held a prominent office in the local Church on the eve of the Civil War. The seminary of Segorbe was the institution through which the diocese prepared its clergy, and the rector’s post combined teaching, discipline, and pastoral care of the seminarians. Peris Polo belonged to the secular (diocesan) clergy rather than to a religious order. Like other Latin-rite Catholic priests of his generation he lived under the obligation of celibacy and did not marry. Surviving notices of his life are relatively brief and concentrate on his seminary role and on the circumstances of his death; they do not preserve a large body of personal writings or detailed contemporary portraits.

The Spanish Civil War began in July 1936. In much of the Republican zone, revolutionary committees and militias carried out a campaign of violence against the Catholic Church in which thousands of bishops, priests, religious, and lay Catholics were killed. In that setting Peris Polo was arrested. On 15 August 1936 he was executed by shooting at Almazora (Almassora) in the province of Castellón. He was forty-six years old. The Catholic Church later judged his death to have been a martyrdom suffered in hatred of the faith (in odium fidei), as part of the wider persecution of the Church in Spain between 1936 and 1939.

Pope John Paul II beatified him in Rome on 11 March 2001 together with 232 other martyrs of the Spanish Civil War associated with the ecclesiastical province of Valencia, a group commonly known as the 233 Martyrs of Valencia. He has not been canonized. In the Diocese of Segorbe-Castellón he is remembered among the local clergy who died in 1936, and his name appears in the official lists of the beatified Spanish martyrs of the twentieth century. Beyond the verified outline of birth, seminary service, and martyrdom, the documentary record of his inner life and day-to-day ministry remains limited, as is often the case with diocesan priests of this period whose public memory rests chiefly on the manner of their death.
