Biography

Short Description

José María Segura Penadés was a Spanish Catholic diocesan priest of the Archdiocese of Valencia who was killed in the anticlerical violence of the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 13 January 1891 in Alcoy, an industrial town in the province of Alicante in eastern Spain. He did not enter a religious congregation; he remained a secular clergyman, formed in the seminary and ordained for pastoral service under the bishop of Valencia. His ministry belonged to the ordinary life of the diocesan priesthood in the Valencian region in the early twentieth century: sacramental care, preaching, and parish work rather than high office, founding activity, or a public literary career.

The Spain of his priesthood was marked by deepening political conflict and by successive waves of anticlerical legislation and agitation, especially after the proclamation of the Second Republic in 1931. When a military rising in July 1936 failed to control the whole country, civil war followed. In Republican-held eastern Spain, including Valencia and Alicante, revolutionary committees and militias carried out a severe persecution of the Catholic Church. Churches were sacked, religious objects destroyed, and clergy hunted. Later diocesan investigations and the Holy See judged that thousands of priests, religious, and lay Catholics were killed in odium fidei, that is, out of hatred of the faith.

Father Segura was arrested in the course of that persecution and was put to death on 13 August 1936 at Gilet in the province of Valencia. He was forty-five years old. Individual contemporary records of many of these summer arrests are sparse; what the beatification documentation established is that he was a priest seized and killed because of his sacred office and his Catholic faith. Like numerous victims of the 1936 massacres, he did not receive a public ecclesiastical funeral at the time, and a precise, independently published account of his last hours is not widely available beyond the summary vitae prepared for the cause.

After the war the Archdiocese of Valencia collected testimonies concerning clergy and laity killed in its territory. Segura’s name was included in a large group process. On 11 March 2001 Pope John Paul II beatified 233 martyrs of the Spanish Civil War associated with Valencia, among them José María Segura Penadés. He has not been canonized. Published biographical detail beyond his birth, priesthood, and martyrdom remains limited; he is remembered principally as one of the Valencian diocesan priests numbered among those blesseds, not as a founder, theologian, or public figure. His commemoration belongs to the memory of the 1936 persecution of the Church in Spain and to the group of Valencian martyrs beatified in 2001.
