Biography

José Melchor García-Sampedro Suárez, known in religion as Melchor García Sampedro, was a Spanish Dominican friar, missionary bishop, and martyr of the Catholic Church. He was born in 1821 in Cortes, in Asturias in northern Spain. He entered the Order of Preachers and was ordained a priest. Like many Spanish Dominicans of the nineteenth century, he was assigned to the order’s Asian missions, passing through the Philippines, then a principal Dominican base in the East, before being sent to Tonkin in what is now northern Vietnam.

In Tonkin he served the vicariate of Central Tonkin during the reign of Emperor Tự Đức, whose edicts against Christianity produced one of the most severe persecutions of the Nguyễn period. García-Sampedro was appointed coadjutor to the vicar apostolic and was consecrated a bishop with a titular see, sharing pastoral charge of European missionaries and a large Vietnamese Catholic community. His ministry took place under laws that banned the faith, seized church property, and prescribed death, exile, or forced recantation for clergy and converts.

In 1858 he was arrested in the course of that persecution. After imprisonment and torture he was put to death at Nam Định on 28 July 1858. Traditional hagiographical accounts describe a particularly brutal execution. He is counted among the Martyrs of Vietnam, the group of 117 saints—European missionaries together with Vietnamese priests, religious, and lay people—killed for the faith between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries.

Pope Pius X beatified him in 1906. On 19 June 1988 Pope John Paul II canonized him in Rome together with the other Vietnamese martyrs. The Catholic Church commemorates them collectively on 24 November. García-Sampedro is venerated as a saint and martyr of the Dominican Order and of the Church in Vietnam.
