Biography

Short Description

José Olallo Valdés was born in Havana, then part of Spanish colonial Cuba, on 12 February 1820. He was abandoned as a newborn at the foundling hospital and orphanage known as the Real Casa de Beneficencia (associated with Saint Joseph) in Havana; his parents are unknown, and the surnames Olallo and Valdés come from the institution’s records rather than from a documented family. He grew up among other abandoned children in a colonial society sharply divided by race, class, and legal status. He received a basic education at the orphanage and as a youth encountered the Brothers Hospitallers of Saint John of God, a Catholic religious order dedicated to hospital work and care of the sick, which then maintained houses on the island.

Around 1835, at about the age of fifteen, he entered the novitiate of the Brothers Hospitallers in Havana. He was not ordained a priest; he lived and died as a lay religious brother. Shortly after entering he was sent to the hospital of San Juan de Dios in Puerto Príncipe, the interior city later renamed Camagüey, and he remained attached to that house for the rest of his life—more than fifty years. There he worked as a nurse, pharmacist, and administrator of daily care for patients, and in time he served as superior of the small community of brothers. Accounts from his lifetime describe him as treating Spaniards and Cubans, people of European and African descent, the wealthy and the destitute without distinction, in keeping with the Hospitallers’ characteristic vow of hospitality to the sick.

His reputation for charity became especially strong during Cuba’s nineteenth-century wars of independence. During the Ten Years’ War (1868–1878) and later unrest, the hospital received wounded from both the Spanish army and Cuban insurgents. Olallo insisted on treating all of them and is remembered for intervening to protect patients from political reprisals. He also sought out the poor and ill in the streets who would not or could not come to the hospital, and he became a familiar figure in the city. He lived under the Hospitaller vows of poverty, chastity, and service to the sick, and he never married.

He died in Camagüey on 7 March 1889. Popular devotion began after his death. The cause for beatification was taken up in the late twentieth century; a decree of heroic virtues was issued in 2006, and he was beatified on 29 November 2008 in Camagüey in a ceremony authorized by Pope Benedict XVI and celebrated by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins as papal legate. He was the first person born in Cuba to be beatified. He has not been canonized. His liturgical memorial is 7 March. His life is remembered in the Cuban Church as an example of humble, non-ordained religious service and of medical charity across the social and political divides of colonial and wartime Cuba.
