Biography

Josep Samsó i Elias was born on 17 January 1887 in Castellbisbal, in the Vallès Occidental of Catalonia, in the province of Barcelona, Spain. He received his ecclesiastical formation at the Seminary of Barcelona and was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Barcelona in 1910. The early years of his ministry were spent in ordinary parish work in that diocese. In the later 1920s he was appointed parish priest of the Basilica of Santa Maria in Mataró, a historic parish in an industrial coastal town of the Maresme. There he remained until his death. He was a diocesan priest, not a member of a religious order, and lived under the Latin discipline of clerical celibacy.

As rector of Santa Maria he was known for a steady, organized pastoral program rather than for public controversy. He promoted catechesis, especially of children, encouraged Eucharistic devotion, fostered Catholic Action, and attended to the poor and the sick of the parish. Contemporary memory of him in Mataró presents a priest of regular prayer, personal austerity, and close attention to the confessional and to parish associations, working in a period of social change, labor conflict, and growing secularization in Catalonia. He sought to strengthen ordinary parish life in a large urban congregation rather than to found a new institute or movement of his own.

The Spanish Civil War began in July 1936. In Republican-held Catalonia an intense anticlerical campaign followed: churches were sacked and burned, and clergy and religious were hunted. Father Samsó did not flee Mataró. He was arrested in the weeks after the rising and held in local detention. On 1 September 1936 he was taken from prison and shot at the cemetery of Cirera in Mataró. He was forty-nine years old. Later accounts of his death, used in the beatification process, hold that he forgave those who killed him. The Holy See judged the killing to have been in odium fidei, in the wider context of the mass murder of Catholic clergy in the Republican zone during the first months of the war.

A cause for beatification was introduced in due course. He was recognized as a martyr, and on 23 January 2010 he was beatified in Mataró by authority of Pope Benedict XVI. Cardinal Angelo Amato, then prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presided at the rite. Blessed Josep Samsó i Elias has not been canonized. His liturgical memorial is kept on 1 September, the anniversary of his death. He is remembered above all in Mataró and in the Archdiocese of Barcelona as a parish priest who remained with his people and died for the faith. No independent list of official patronages is securely established beyond that local cult.
