Biography

Short Description

Joseph Lê Đăng Thị was a Vietnamese Catholic layman and imperial army officer who was put to death for his faith during the anti-Christian persecutions of the Nguyễn dynasty. He is numbered among the 117 Vietnamese Martyrs canonized by the Catholic Church. Born in 1825 in central Vietnam, he entered military service and rose to the rank of captain under Emperor Tự Đức. Unlike the many priests, catechists, and members of religious congregations who also died in the same persecutions, Lê Đăng Thị remained a layman occupying a post within the structures of the Vietnamese state. Christianity had been present in Vietnam since the seventeenth century, but it was repeatedly prohibited by royal edict. Under Tự Đức, whose reign lasted from 1847 to 1883, new and severe decrees against Catholics were issued from the late 1850s, partly in reaction to French military intervention. Believers were ordered to recant, often by trampling a crucifix in public. Those who refused faced imprisonment, torture, and execution.

Lê Đăng Thị had embraced the Catholic faith and was denounced as a Christian. His military rank might have offered a path to a discreet apostasy or to some mitigation of punishment, yet he declined to renounce his religion. He was arrested, examined, and condemned. Contemporary notices of his passion, drawn from missionary reports and local Catholic memory, record that he was executed by strangulation on 24 October 1860. Strangulation was at times applied to persons of official standing, as distinct from the beheading more commonly inflicted on ordinary subjects. Precise details of his childhood, the exact locality of his birth, and his family circumstances are sparsely documented in the hagiographical sources that have reached Western scholarship; he is known principally through the record of his trial and death.

After his execution he was remembered by the local Catholic community as one who had persevered to the end from a position of relative worldly advantage. In the twentieth century the Holy See examined the causes of numerous Vietnamese martyrs from the seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries. They were beatified in several groups at different dates. All 117, including Joseph Lê Đăng Thị, were canonized together by Pope John Paul II on 19 June 1988 in Saint Peter’s Square in Rome. In the General Roman Calendar they are commemorated collectively on 24 November. As a group the Vietnamese Martyrs are invoked as patrons of Vietnam. No distinct individual patronages attached solely to Lê Đăng Thị are prominently recorded in standard liturgical or hagiographical lists.
