Biography

Short Description

Joseph-Marie Gros was born in 1742 in Lyon, in the Kingdom of France. He became a Catholic priest of the diocesan (secular) clergy rather than a member of a religious order, and he served in Paris as a vicar of the parish of Saint-Nicolas-du-Chardonnet, a historic church in the Latin Quarter on the Left Bank. Relatively little is securely recorded of his family, education, or the day-to-day character of his ministry before the Revolution; he is known to history chiefly through his parish assignment, his refusal of the revolutionary clerical oath, and the circumstances of his imprisonment and death.

In 1790 the National Constituent Assembly enacted the Civil Constitution of the Clergy, which reorganized the Church in France under civil authority and required bishops and priests to swear an oath of loyalty to the new order. Those who refused—called refractory or non-juring clergy—were treated as opponents of the Revolution and, after further legislation, as criminals. Gros declined the oath and remained aligned with Rome. After the insurrection of 10 August 1792 that overthrew the monarchy, refractory priests in Paris were arrested in large numbers. Gros was confined in the Prison de l’Abbaye, a former Benedictine abbey near Saint-Germain-des-Prés that had been converted into a jail.

From 2 to 7 September 1792, in the episode known as the September Massacres, armed crowds and improvised tribunals killed more than a thousand prisoners in several Paris detention houses, among them a large number of priests, religious, and laypeople associated with the non-juring Church or the fallen regime. Fear of the Prussian advance and rumors that inmates would join a counter-revolutionary rising helped drive the killings. Joseph-Marie Gros was put to death at the Abbaye on 3 September 1792. Contemporary descriptions of the massacres speak of summary “trials” and killings with swords, pikes, and clubs; no reliably detailed, independently corroborated account of Gros’s last moments appears to survive.

On 17 October 1926 Pope Pius XI beatified 191 victims of the September Massacres, including Gros, recognizing them as martyrs who had died for fidelity to the Catholic Church rather than accept the schismatic oath. They are commemorated collectively, usually on 2 September, as the Blessed Martyrs of September (Martyrs of the September Massacres). Gros has not been canonized. Beyond his birth in Lyon, his service at Saint-Nicolas-du-Chardonnet, his imprisonment as a non-juring priest, and his death in the massacres, personal writings and a full vita are lacking; he is remembered as one of the Parisian clergy who chose imprisonment and death rather than apostasy during the Revolution.
