Biography

Short Description

Joseph Mukasa Balikuddembe was a Catholic layman, court official, and martyr of the Kingdom of Buganda in what is now Uganda, and the first of the Catholic Uganda Martyrs to be put to death. He was born in 1860 in Mawokota, a county of Buganda, and belonged to the Kayozi clan. As a youth he was attached to the royal court, a customary path for boys of standing, and he rose in service under Kabaka Muteesa I. After Muteesa’s death in 1884 he continued at court under the young Kabaka Mwanga II, becoming majordomo of the royal household and head of the pages who waited on the king. That office gave him real influence inside the palace and made him responsible for the young men whose lives were bound to the kabaka’s person.

Christian missions had reached Buganda in the 1870s. Anglican missionaries of the Church Missionary Society arrived first; Catholic Missionaries of Africa (the White Fathers), led in Buganda by Siméon Lourdel, followed. Mukasa accepted Catholic instruction, was baptized with the name Joseph in the early 1880s, and became a leading figure among the Catholic pages and officials at court. He encouraged baptism and regular prayer and used his seniority to shield the Christian pages. Court life under Mwanga was marked by the king’s sudden violence and by sexual demands made on the pages. The Christian pages, following the teaching they had received, refused those demands. Mukasa was identified with their refusal and was regarded by the king as the man who taught them to disobey.

The crisis came in 1885. In October of that year the Anglican bishop James Hannington, travelling toward Buganda by the eastern route through Busoga—a direction the Baganda treated as ritually dangerous and politically threatening—was detained and killed on Mwanga’s orders. Mukasa reproached the kabaka for the murder. Mwanga, already suspicious that the missions prepared a European takeover and angry that the pages would not yield to him in sexual and religious matters, condemned his majordomo. On 15 November 1885 Joseph Mukasa was taken to the Nakivubo swamp near the capital. The chief executioner, Mukajanga, beheaded him; his body was then burned. He was about twenty-five years old. His death opened the persecution that, in the following months, would claim many more Christian pages, most famously Charles Lwanga and his companions, burned at Namugongo in June 1886.

Joseph Mukasa Balikuddembe was beatified by Pope Benedict XV on 6 June 1920 with the other Uganda Martyrs and was canonized by Pope Paul VI on 18 October 1964, during the Second Vatican Council. The Catholic Church keeps their common feast on 3 June. He is venerated as the Catholic protomartyr of Buganda: a lay leader and catechist rather than a priest, who used high court office to protect the young Christians of the palace. A church and shrine at Nakivubo in Kampala mark the place of his execution; he is also commemorated with the rest of the Uganda Martyrs at Namugongo.
