Biography

Short Description

Joseph of Leonessa (Giuseppe da Leonessa) was born Eufranio Desiderio in 1556 in the town of Leonessa in central Italy, at that time within the Kingdom of Naples. He belonged to a family engaged in the wool trade. After the death of his father he was brought up by relatives who hoped he would pursue a secular career. Drawn instead to religious life, he entered the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin in the 1570s, taking the name Joseph. He was ordained a priest and soon became known as a preacher of parish missions in the rural areas of Umbria and neighboring provinces.

In 1587 Joseph went as a missionary to Constantinople in the Ottoman Empire. His principal work there was the pastoral care of Christian galley slaves and other captives. His public profession of Christianity and attempts to convert Muslims resulted in arrest, imprisonment, and torture. Hagiographical tradition holds that he was suspended by a hook and that he sought to preach before the Ottoman court, after which he was sentenced to death but subsequently released, an outcome often attributed to diplomatic pressure from European powers. He returned to Italy after about two years.

From the late 1580s until his death he worked as an itinerant preacher across central Italy, particularly in Umbria, the Abruzzi, and the Marches. He lived with notable personal austerity and was remembered for attending the poor and the sick, including in times of epidemic. He acquired a reputation among the people for holiness, for the conversion of sinners, and for miracles, though he remained a simple friar without high office. His ministry belonged to the wave of Capuchin popular missions that marked Catholic reform in sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century Italy.

Joseph died on 4 February 1612 at Amatrice while engaged in a preaching mission. Devotion to him developed first in his native district. He was beatified by Pope Clement XII in 1737 and canonized by Pope Benedict XIV in 1746. His liturgical feast is observed on 4 February. He is venerated as the patron saint of Leonessa and is commemorated in the Capuchin order as an example of missionary courage and of service to the enslaved and the poor.
