Biography

Short Description

Joseph Oriol, known in Catalan as Josep Oriol, was a Catholic priest of Barcelona whose reputation for evangelical poverty, long hours in the confessional, and reputed miracles made him one of the most popular holy figures of early modern Catalonia. He was born in Barcelona on 23 November 1650 and was educated in his native city. He studied theology at the University of Barcelona, where he took a doctorate, and was ordained a priest in the 1670s. From the outset of his ministry he declined comfortable ecclesiastical benefices and chose a life of voluntary destitution, living on alms, practicing severe fasting and bodily mortification, and giving away whatever came into his hands. He remained a secular, diocesan priest rather than a member of a religious order, but his manner of life was that of an urban ascetic attached to parish work among the poor.

In the later seventeenth century Oriol made a pilgrimage on foot to Rome, hoping either to remain in the service of the Church in the Eternal City or to be sent to the missions overseas. After a period in Italy he returned to Barcelona, which he thereafter treated as the field of work assigned to him. He attached himself especially to the parish church of Santa Maria del Pi, where he spent long hours hearing confessions and giving spiritual direction without distinction of persons. Contemporaries credited him with numerous cures of the sick and with other extraordinary graces, and he was popularly styled the Thaumaturgus, or wonder-worker, of Barcelona. He combined that reputation with uncompromising personal austerity: he slept little, ate poorly, dressed with studied simplicity, and was known for catechesis and care of the needy as well as for the confessional.

Oriol died in Barcelona on 23 March 1702. Popular devotion to him began at once and continued through the eighteenth century, supported by reports of favors attributed to his intercession. He was beatified by Pope Pius VII in 1806 and canonized by Pope Pius X in 1909. His feast is kept on 23 March. He is particularly venerated in Barcelona, where his remains are preserved in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi, and he is invoked as a patron of the city and of the sick. His cult remains a distinctive part of Barcelona’s Catholic memory, associated with care for the poor, the practice of confession, and trust in divine help in illness.
