Biography

Short Description

Joseph Túc, known in Vietnamese as Giuse Túc, was a Roman Catholic layman from Vietnam who is venerated as one of the 117 Vietnamese Martyrs. These martyrs—bishops, priests, religious, and lay faithful—were killed for their Christian faith across the 18th and 19th centuries in the territories of Tonkin and Annam under the Nguyễn dynasty and earlier rulers. They were canonized together in Rome on 19 June 1988. Surviving documentation for many of the lay martyrs is sparse, because imperial edicts against Christianity often involved the destruction of Christian writings and because ordinary rural believers left few records of their own.

Túc is identified in Catholic tradition as a farmer from northern Vietnam, in the Red River Delta region that was a center of Dominican missionary work as well as of repeated state crackdowns. In the mid-19th century, especially under Emperor Tự Đức, Vietnamese authorities treated Christianity as a heterodox and politically dangerous teaching linked to European powers. Edicts required Christians to recant, commonly by trampling a crucifix. Those who refused faced imprisonment, torture, and execution, most often by beheading. Joseph Túc was arrested in this climate, declined to apostatize, and was put to death. Precise dates of his birth and martyrdom, the exact place of execution, and any family details are not firmly established in the accessible historical record.

The 117 were drawn from several earlier groups that had been beatified at different times in the late 19th and 20th centuries; which beatification cohort included Túc is not clearly specified in standard summaries of his life. The Church commemorates the Vietnamese Martyrs collectively on 24 November. They are widely invoked by Vietnamese Catholics at home and in the diaspora as witnesses who remained faithful under prolonged state persecution. Because so little contemporary biographical material survives for this particular lay martyr, accounts of Joseph Túc necessarily remain general and must be distinguished from better-documented companions such as Andrew Dung-Lac.
