Biography
Joseph Vandor (Hungarian: József Vándor; known in Spanish as José Vandor) was a twentieth-century Hungarian Salesian priest and missionary in Cuba who was later beatified by the Catholic Church. He was born on 29 October 1909 in Csepreg, in the western Hungarian county of Vas, then in the Kingdom of Hungary. Attracted to the educational and youth apostolate of Saint John Bosco, he entered the Salesian Congregation (Society of Saint Francis de Sales). After religious formation and study he was ordained a priest in the 1930s and was assigned to the Salesian missions abroad rather than to a career in his native country.
In 1936 he left Europe for Cuba, where the Salesians already conducted schools and parishes. Vandor served in more than one Salesian community on the island; his longest and best-attested work was in Santa Clara, in central Cuba. There he took part in the direction of Salesian educational work and in ordinary parish ministry. Those who knew him described a priest of regular prayer, simplicity of life, and particular dedication to hearing confessions and accompanying young people, in keeping with the Salesian preventive system. He did not rise to the episcopate or other high office; contemporary memory of him rests on pastoral availability rather than on public prominence.
The Cuban Revolution of 1959 and the nationalization of Catholic schools in the early 1960s transformed the conditions of religious life on the island. Many foreign missionaries departed. Vandor remained in Cuba and continued to exercise priestly ministry among the local faithful under the constraints then placed on the Church. In later life he developed Parkinson’s disease, which gradually reduced his physical capacity for work. He died in Santa Clara on 8 October 1979.
Devotion to him continued in the local church and within the Salesian family in Cuba and Hungary. After the diocesan phase of his cause, Pope Francis recognized his heroic virtues and declared him Venerable in January 2017. A miracle attributed to his intercession was approved, and he was beatified in Santa Clara on 8 October 2017, the anniversary of his death, by Cardinal Angelo Amato, then Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, acting in the name of Pope Francis. His liturgical memorial is kept on 8 October. He is venerated especially by Salesians and by Catholics in Cuba and Hungary.
