Biography

Short Description

Joseph Yuan Zaide (Yuan Zaide) was a Chinese Catholic priest and martyr of the Qing period, numbered among the 120 Martyr Saints of China. He was born in 1766 in Qionglai (historically Qiongzhou) in Sichuan, in a region where Catholic communities had taken root largely through the Paris Foreign Missions Society. Throughout the eighteenth century Christianity in the empire remained legally insecure: Qing statutes classed it among heterodox teachings, and local officials could enforce bans when court policy or provincial unrest made Christians a convenient target. Yuan belonged to the first generations of native Chinese clergy trained so that the Sichuan church would not depend solely on European missionaries.

As a diocesan priest he served scattered Catholic families and villages in Sichuan in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. After the Jiaqing Emperor’s accession, pressure on Christians intensified. Edicts in the early 1810s directed officials to seize European missionaries and Chinese who would not recant. Several leading figures of the Sichuan mission were arrested in those years, including Bishop Gabriel Taurin Dufresse, executed at Chengdu in 1815, and the Chinese priest Augustine Zhao Rong. Yuan continued pastoral work under these conditions until he himself was taken.

In 1817 he was imprisoned, interrogated, and pressed to apostatize. Accounts of the Sichuan persecution describe Chinese priests of this wave as subjected to beating and prolonged detention before sentence. Remaining constant, Yuan was condemned and executed by strangulation on 24 June 1817 in Chengdu, the provincial capital. Strangulation was a standard Qing method of capital punishment for certain classes of offender. His death belongs to a cluster of Sichuan martyrdoms between 1815 and 1823 that later entered the Roman martyrology.

Pope Leo XIII beatified him on 27 May 1900 with other martyrs of the Chinese missions. On 1 October 2000 Pope John Paul II canonized him in Saint Peter’s Square as one of the 120 Martyr Saints of China, a group spanning 1648 to 1930 and including both Chinese faithful and foreign missionaries. In the General Roman Calendar the 120 are commemorated together on 9 July. Veneration of Yuan is therefore mainly as a member of that college of martyrs; no widely attested individual patronages are recorded. Outside liturgical notices, missionary reports of the Sichuan church, and the acts prepared for his cause, documentation of his life is relatively sparse and centers on the circumstances of his arrest and execution rather than a full personal biography.
