Biography
Joseph Zhang Dapeng, known in older missionary literature as Joseph Chang Ta-peng and in Chinese as Zhang Dapeng, was a Catholic lay martyr of Qing-dynasty China. He was born in 1754 in Duyun, in Guizhou province in the southwest of the empire. He earned his living as a silk merchant. In adulthood he came into contact with Catholic teaching, which had been carried into the interior by missionaries and Chinese catechists despite official hostility. He was baptized in 1800 and received the Christian name Joseph. Conversion in that setting often meant a break with customary rites, including those connected with ancestors, and sources note opposition from members of his non-Christian family.
Once baptized, Zhang Dapeng devoted himself to the work of a catechist. He opened a room of his house as a place where Christians could gather for prayer and where inquirers could be instructed. Guizhou was mission territory associated with the Paris Foreign Missions Society; foreign priests were few, frequently expelled, or forced into hiding, so the survival of local communities depended heavily on lay leaders. Zhang Dapeng belonged to that class of Chinese catechists who taught doctrine, prepared candidates for baptism, and kept worship alive when clergy could not be present. His activity took place under the Jiaqing Emperor, whose government reiterated earlier Qing prohibitions on Christianity.
In 1814 persecution intensified in Guizhou. Zhang Dapeng was arrested for his Christian faith and confined in Guiyang, the provincial capital. He would not recant. On 12 January 1815 he was executed by strangulation, a legally prescribed form of capital punishment in the Qing code. He was in his early sixties. Other Christians of the same province, including the catechist Peter Wu Guosheng who had been put to death in late 1814, perished in the same campaign. Zhang Dapeng’s death thus belongs to a documented cluster of Guizhou martyrdoms in 1814–1815 rather than to an isolated incident.
The Holy See recognized his martyrdom in the early twentieth century. Pope Pius X beatified him on 2 May 1909 together with other Chinese martyrs whose causes had been introduced in the preceding decades. On 1 October 2000 Pope John Paul II canonized him among the one hundred and twenty Martyr Saints of China, officially commemorated as Augustine Zhao Rong and Companions. Their collective feast day in the General Roman Calendar is 9 July. Zhang Dapeng is venerated as a lay catechist and martyr; separate, well-attested patronages attached to him alone are not recorded in the principal hagiographical notices, and the place of his burial is not securely identified in those same sources.
