Biography

Short Description

Jovan Branković belonged to the last generation of the Branković dynasty, the family that had ruled the Serbian Despotate until the Ottoman conquest of Smederevo in 1459. He was a son of the former despot Stefan Branković, who had been blinded during the political upheavals of the mid-fifteenth century, and of Angelina Arianiti, an Albanian noblewoman whose sister Donika was the wife of Skanderbeg. After the fall of the despotate, Stefan and Angelina lived in exile, first among their Albanian kinsmen and later under the protection of Western Christian powers, including the Hungarian crown. Jovan was born in that exile in the mid-1460s; the precise year and place of his birth are not firmly established in surviving sources. He had an elder brother, Đorđe, and a sister, Marija, who married Boniface III, Marquis of Montferrat. The family’s later fortunes were tied to Hungary, which continued to recognize a Serbian despot as a Christian vassal on the Ottoman frontier.

In 1496 Đorđe Branković laid aside the despot’s title and entered the monastic life under the name Maksim. Jovan then received the title of Despot of Serbia from King Vladislas II of Hungary and took up rule in Syrmia (Srem), a region of the Hungarian kingdom that had become a refuge for Serbs displaced by Ottoman expansion. His principal residence was at Kupinovo (Kupinik) on the Sava. Although the medieval Serbian state had ceased to exist, the despot’s court in Syrmia preserved a remnant of Serbian political authority, Orthodox church life, and noble patronage. Jovan’s position was that of a Hungarian vassal charged with defending the southern border and rallying Serbs against the Ottomans, a role the Branković house had played for decades after the loss of its ancestral lands.

Jovan married Jelena Jakšić, daughter of the Serbian magnate Stefan Jakšić, thereby allying the Branković house with another leading Serbian family in Hungarian service. The marriage produced daughters but no son who survived to inherit, and with Jovan the male line of the Branković dynasty came to an end. After his death his widow remained an important political figure; the Hungarian king granted the despot’s title to the nobleman Ivaniš Berislavić, who married her and thus continued the institution of the Serbian despotate under the crown of Hungary. Jovan’s daughters were married into neighboring princely and noble families, carrying Branković descent into the ruling houses of Wallachia and Moldavia and into the aristocracy of the Hungarian-Croatian realm.

Jovan Branković died on 10 December 1502. He was interred at Krušedol on Fruška Gora in Syrmia, which became the principal monastery and mausoleum of his family. His mother Angelina and his brother Maksim, who later served as a hierarch in the Serbian Church, completed and endowed the house in the years after Jovan’s death; the monastery remained a center of Serbian Orthodox life under later Ottoman rule. The Serbian Orthodox Church venerates Jovan as a saint together with Stefan, Angelina, and Maksim, commemorating him on 10 December, the date of his death. In Serbian historical and ecclesiastical memory he stands as the last Branković despot, a ruler of the exile generation who maintained the dynasty’s title, faith, and patronage on the Hungarian-Ottoman frontier at the turn of the sixteenth century.
