Biography

Short Description

Jovan Vladimir, also known in English as John Vladimir, was a medieval Serbian prince who ruled the principality of Duklja (Dioclea) in the early eleventh century. Duklja lay along the Adriatic hinterland in the territory of present-day Montenegro and was at that time the most powerful of the Serbian polities. He was the son of Petrislav, a local ruler of Duklja, and succeeded his father around the turn of the millennium. Near-contemporary tradition and later medieval narrative, above all the Chronicle of the Priest of Duklja, present him as a sovereign of unusual piety, gentleness, and justice, more inclined to prayer and peace than to raiding or revenge. His reign fell in a period when the First Bulgarian Empire under Tsar Samuel still dominated much of the central Balkans and when Byzantine power under Basil II was pressing westward.

In the first decade of the eleventh century Samuel invaded Duklja. Vladimir was captured and imprisoned at the Bulgarian royal residence of Prespa. Hagiographic tradition relates that Samuel’s daughter Kosara (also called Theodora Kosara) visited the captives, was struck by Vladimir’s bearing and virtue, and obtained her father’s consent to marry him. Samuel then restored Vladimir to Duklja as a vassal. The marriage tied the coastal Serbian principality to the Bulgarian imperial house. Vladimir continued to govern with a reputation for holiness; later accounts stress that he refused unnecessary bloodshed and devoted himself to Christian observance. After Samuel’s death in 1014 the Bulgarian throne passed first to Gavril Radomir and then, by assassination, to Ivan Vladislav, who regarded the Dukljan prince with suspicion.

In 1016 Ivan Vladislav summoned Vladimir to Prespa under a sworn guarantee of safe-conduct. Despite warnings, Vladimir went, trusting the oath and divine protection. On arrival he was seized and beheaded on 22 May 1016. His death was at once treated as martyrdom. His widow Kosara recovered the body and had it translated to the church of the Theotokos, known as Prečista Krajinska, in Krajina near Bar. She later took the veil there and was buried beside him. No children of the marriage are recorded in the surviving sources, and succession in the region passed through collateral kin, notably the line of his uncle Dragimir, from which Stefan Vojislav later emerged.

A cult of Saint Jovan Vladimir formed quickly among the Serbs and spread among Orthodox communities in what are now Montenegro, Albania, and North Macedonia. In the late fourteenth century the Albanian lord Karl Thopia translated the relics to a church he founded near Elbasan, which became a lasting pilgrimage centre; the relics have since been moved again, including to the Orthodox cathedral in Tirana. He is commemorated on 22 May and is especially honoured as patron of the city of Bar. Although the Priest of Duklja’s chronicle was written centuries later and mixes history with legend, the outline of Vladimir’s rule, captivity, marriage to Kosara, and death at Prespa is accepted by modern historians as essentially historical. He remains one of the earliest Serbian rulers to be widely venerated as a saint and an important figure in the medieval history of the western Balkans.
