Biography

Short Description

Józef Bilczewski was born on 26 April 1860 in Wilamowice, a village in the Austrian Empire in the historical region of Galicia, now in southern Poland. He was the son of peasants Franciszek Bilczewski and Anna Kopeć and grew up in modest circumstances as the eldest of a large family. After secondary studies at the gymnasium in Wadowice, he entered priestly formation and studied theology in Kraków and at the University of Vienna, where he earned a doctorate in theology. He was ordained a priest in 1884. Further studies took him to Rome and Paris, where he specialized in dogmatic theology and in the archaeology and art of the early Church, fields in which he later published scholarly work, including research on the Eucharist in light of early written, iconographic, and epigraphic evidence.

In 1891 he was appointed professor of dogmatic theology at the University of Lviv (Lwów). He became a respected academic and served as rector of the university around the turn of the century. On 17 December 1900 Pope Leo XIII appointed him Archbishop of Lviv of the Latins; he received episcopal consecration in January 1901. The appointment placed a relatively young scholar at the head of an important and complex metropolitan see on the eastern edge of the Latin Catholic world, in a city shared by Poles, Ukrainians, Jews, and others, and by Latin Catholics, Greek Catholics, Orthodox Christians, and still other communities.

As archbishop, Bilczewski emphasized pastoral visitation, the building and repair of churches, the education of clergy and laity, and the application of Catholic social teaching associated with Pope Leo XIII. He supported schools and charitable works and sought to improve the conditions of workers and the poor. During the First World War, the fighting for Lviv in 1918–1919, and the difficult years that followed, he remained in the city, organized aid for the wounded and for refugees, and assisted people without distinction of nationality or religion. He was noted for personal simplicity and for a firm but irenic style of leadership in a time of nationalist tension.

Bilczewski died in Lviv on 20 March 1923 and was first buried in the Janów Cemetery there; his remains were later transferred to the Latin cathedral of Lviv. Pope John Paul II beatified him in Lviv on 26 June 2001 during an apostolic visit to Ukraine. Pope Benedict XVI canonized him in Saint Peter's Square in Rome on 23 October 2005. The Catholic Church commemorates him on 20 March. He is remembered as a pastor and scholar who served a contested borderland church through war and social upheaval.
