Biography

Short Description

Józef Cebula was born on 23 March 1902 in the village of Malnia in Upper Silesia, then part of the German Empire and inhabited by a large Polish-speaking Catholic population. He grew up in a poor and devout household. As a child he contracted tuberculosis, which interrupted his education and left him in fragile health for the rest of his life. From an early age he wished to become a priest. After elementary schooling he entered formation with the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, a congregation founded in the nineteenth century for missionary work among the poor. He pursued his novitiate and studies in the restored Polish state of the 1920s, persevering despite recurring illness, and was ordained a priest on 5 June 1927.

After ordination he was assigned to teaching and formation rather than to overseas missions. He taught at the Oblate minor seminary and later served as its superior. He was then appointed novice master at the Oblate monastery in Markowice, in the Kuyavian region of Poland, where he was responsible for the spiritual and disciplinary training of candidates to the congregation. Those who knew him in the 1930s described a reserved, conscientious religious, faithful to the Oblate rule and to ordinary pastoral duties. His public life before the war was that of a typical educator-priest of interwar Poland, without wider fame.

The German invasion of Poland in September 1939 placed the Catholic clergy under severe restriction. The Oblate house at Markowice was seized and used as a detention site, and Cebula was forbidden to exercise his priestly ministry. Polish priests were widely treated by the occupation authorities as bearers of national and religious identity. He continued nonetheless to celebrate Mass in secret, to hear confessions, and to bring the sacraments to the faithful. Such clandestine pastoral work was regarded as a political offense. He was detained and released at least once, then kept under surveillance.

In April 1941 the Gestapo arrested him. After local imprisonment and interrogation he was deported to the Mauthausen concentration camp in annexed Austria, a camp of extreme severity built around a granite quarry and used to destroy clergy and political prisoners. There he was subjected to forced labor and abuse. On 9 May 1941 camp guards shot him; survivor accounts state that they mocked his priesthood, forced him to run while carrying a heavy load, and then killed him. His body was burned in the camp crematorium. He was thirty-nine years old. No grave survives.

On 13 June 1999, during a visit to Poland, Pope John Paul II beatified Cebula in Warsaw together with 107 other Polish victims of the Nazi occupation, a group known as the 108 Martyrs of World War II. Their collective liturgical memorial is observed on 12 June. Cebula has not been canonized. He is venerated in the Catholic Church as a blessed martyr of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate and of the Polish Church in the twentieth century.
