Biography
Józef Đỗ Quang Hiển (Vietnamese: Giuse Đỗ Quang Hiển) was a native Vietnamese priest of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) and one of the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam. He was born in 1775 in the village of Quần Anh, in the Nam Định region of Tonkin in northern Vietnam, in the last years of the Lê–Trịnh order and shortly before Nguyễn unification under Gia Long. The Dominican Province of the Holy Rosary, based in the Philippines, had long maintained missions in Eastern Tonkin and trained a native clergy. Đỗ Quang Hiển entered that order, was ordained a priest, and served Catholic communities in the apostolic vicariate of Eastern Tonkin, territory later associated with the diocese of Bùi Chu.
Under Emperor Minh Mạng (1820–1841) the Nguyễn court issued edicts that banned Christianity, expelled foreign missionaries, and required suspected Christians to trample a crucifix as a test of loyalty. Native priests were treated as especially dangerous because they could keep the Church alive without European personnel. Đỗ Quang Hiển continued pastoral work in this climate—administering sacraments and supporting communities under pressure to apostatize. Dominican and missionary reports later used in the Roman process describe him as remaining in ministry despite the risk of arrest.
He was seized during the persecution, imprisoned, and pressed to renounce the faith. He refused. On 9 May 1840 he was executed by strangulation at the execution ground of Hải Dương, a method sometimes used for condemned clergy. He was about sixty-five. His death belongs to the large series of executions of bishops, priests, and laypeople in Tonkin and Cochinchina from the 1830s through the 1860s, which the Church judged to have been suffered in odium fidei.
The Vietnamese martyrs were proposed for veneration in several groups by date and religious family. Đỗ Quang Hiển was beatified by Pope Pius X on 2 May 1909 with nineteen companions. On 19 June 1988 Pope John Paul II canonized him together with 116 others under the title Saint Andrew Dung-Lac and Companions. Their feast is kept on 24 November in the General Roman Calendar, and they are venerated as patrons of Vietnam. Beyond the outlines preserved in Dominican chronicles and the beatification and canonization acts, independent civil documentation of his childhood, studies, and the precise sequence of his arrest remains sparse.
