Biography

Short Description

Józef Sebastian Pelczar was born on 17 January 1842 in Korczyna, a village in the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria within the Austrian Empire, in what is now southeastern Poland. He grew up in a devout Polish Catholic family during the partitions of Poland, when Galicia was under Habsburg rule. After early schooling he entered the diocesan seminary of Przemyśl and was ordained a priest on 17 July 1864. He was then sent to Rome for higher studies, where he earned doctorates in theology and in canon law. Those Roman years also deepened his lifelong devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a theme that later shaped both his writings and the religious congregation he founded.

Returning to Galicia, he combined pastoral work with an academic career. From the later 1870s he taught at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, in fields including church history, canon law, and pastoral theology. He served as dean of the theological faculty and, in 1882–1883, as rector of the university. He was a prolific author of historical, moral, and devotional works, including substantial treatments of Church history and popular books promoting devotion to the Sacred Heart and to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He also took part in the social Catholicism of the period, encouraging education, Catholic associations, and care for workers, servants, and the urban poor in industrializing Austrian Poland.

On 15 April 1894 in Kraków he founded the Congregation of the Sister Servants of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, a community of women religious devoted to the Heart of Jesus and engaged in teaching, nursing, and assistance to the poor, especially women and girls. Toward the close of the nineteenth century he was named Bishop of Przemyśl and governed that diocese from 1900 until his death. His episcopate spanned the last years of Austrian rule, the First World War, and the restoration of Polish independence in 1918. As ordinary he held synods, attended to seminary formation, promoted catechesis and the Catholic press, and sought to sustain parish life in a large, often poor borderland diocese that included both Polish and Ukrainian populations. He remained in Przemyśl through wartime occupation and hardship.

Pelczar died in Przemyśl on 28 March 1924 and was buried in the cathedral there. A reputation for holiness persisted after his death. Pope John Paul II beatified him on 2 June 1991 in Rzeszów, during a pastoral visit to Poland, and canonized him in Rome on 18 May 2003. The Catholic Church observes his liturgical memorial on 19 January. He is remembered as a diocesan priest and bishop rather than as a member of a religious order: a scholar-pastor and founder who linked university teaching, social action, and a strongly Christocentric piety in the Polish lands of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
