Biography

Short Description

József Mindszenty was born József Pehm on 29 March 1892 in Csehimindszent, a village in Vas County in the Kingdom of Hungary, then part of Austria-Hungary. His parents, József Pehm and Borbála Kovács, were smallholders of German-Hungarian (Swabian) origin. He received his secondary and seminary education in Szombathely and was ordained a priest of that diocese in June 1915. In the following decades he served in parish ministry and Catholic education, wrote on social and religious questions, and became a prominent figure in Hungarian Catholic public life. He opposed the short-lived Hungarian Soviet Republic of 1919 and later criticized both radical right-wing and left-wing movements. In 1941 he changed his family name to Mindszenty, after his birthplace.

In March 1944 Pope Pius XII appointed him Bishop of Veszprém. During the German occupation of Hungary and the Arrow Cross period he spoke against the deportation of Jews and the confiscation of ecclesiastical property; the Arrow Cross authorities imprisoned him in late 1944. After the war, in 1945, he was appointed Archbishop of Esztergom, which carried the historic title of Prince-Primate of Hungary. Pius XII created him a cardinal in 1946. As primate he refused to accept the communist government's subordination of the Church, including the nationalization of Catholic schools and pressure on religious orders, and he became the leading public opponent of the Rákosi regime within Hungary.

The Hungarian communist authorities arrested him on 26 December 1948. After prolonged interrogation involving physical and psychological coercion he was forced through a show trial in Budapest in February 1949, convicted of treason and related charges, and sentenced to life imprisonment. Western governments and the Holy See denounced the trial as a fabrication. He remained incarcerated until the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, when he was released on 30 October. When Soviet troops suppressed the revolution, he took refuge on 4 November 1956 in the United States Embassy in Budapest, where he remained for fifteen years as a politically sensitive guest, unable to exercise his office but internationally recognized as a prisoner of conscience.

Under an agreement between the Holy See and the Hungarian People's Republic he left Hungary in September 1971 and settled in Vienna, from where he visited Hungarian communities in Western Europe and the Americas and published his memoirs. In 1973–1974 Pope Paul VI, pursuing a policy of Ostpolitik, declared the Archdiocese of Esztergom vacant so that a new archbishop could be appointed; Mindszenty submitted but made known his disagreement. He died in Vienna on 6 May 1975 and was first buried at the shrine of Mariazell in Austria. In May 1991 his remains were reinterred in the crypt of Esztergom Cathedral. A cause for beatification was introduced; in 2019 Pope Francis recognized his heroic virtues and declared him Venerable. He has not been beatified or canonized.
